Would you want David Blatt as PHX Head Coach?

Post#1 » by silverstyne » Sat Jan 23, 2016 7:38 am

Prior to his CLE stint, David Blatt has been widely regarded in coaching circles as a good offensive minded coach. Admittedly his time with the CAVs wasnt really that remarkable due to LBJs interference, but i think a young, clean-slate team like ours would be a good fit for him to implement his plays. What do you guys think?

Yes.
But will be behind a couple of better suited candidates.

You bet. In fairness, people weren't satisfied with how he was using Love. But it was shameful how he was treated in Cleveland.

I'd have to say no. Since the biggest knock on him was not being respected by players and having lost the locker room. We're in the same boat with Hornaceck and we'd need a coach that knows how to handle players better.

I really think he got a raw deal in CLE. In order to survive there, he had to bend over backwards for LBJ, which undermined his authority big time. There was an article somewhere where it stated how muted he was in CLE compared to his previous stints. I dont think he would have any trouble instilling any discipline in our young team. Hed be a nice candidate for us considering there would be only few options out there left who would be willing to take on us.

No thanks. I'd rather go with Earl Watson instead.

I wouldn't want to sign a new head coach mid-season. If we make a move, I'd rather it be in the offseason. I'd also want a coach who has a solid system, and a coach who develops youth, since we have that in abundance.

I'm actually thinking we should make a move for Walton. He has AZ ties, and he has had a good experience within a championship team. He is young, and seems fairly smart.

That's my guy. Already showed he knows how to win with talent, just get him some talent. Plus he is young.

Absolutely not. Why would we go from one coach who has lost the locker room to another who got fired because of that?

My top 2 candidates are either Luke Walton who was already mentioned or Kevin Ollie. Ollie seems like a no nonsense head coach who won't let the inmates run the asylum and also was a former PG who might be a great mentor for both Bledsoe and Knight. Granted it might be impossible to pry him away from his alma mater but I think he would be a great fit

I would give Walton a shot. If he can make this team play half as great as the Warriors I would be grateful. We'll have to get rid of some of these mitches on the current roster for that to happen though

based on Blatt's reputation coming from Israel, yes. based on Blatt's reputation in Cleveland, absolutely not.

granted, you don't have any LeBron's to contend with in this locker room. that would probably make it a lot easier for him to actually do some coaching.

i just don't know what Blatt can do. Windhorst has said over and over again that LeBron and Lue were actually doing the coaching. if that's so, what can i attribute to Blatt, and what can't i? how good is he? we don't really know.

Walton makes sense coming from the Warriors (and the Lakers, once upon a time, that played against us), but I think he's probably too soft and too young for this locker room. if Markieff Morris can push Jeff Hornacek around, he can push Luke Walton around all the same.

here's a list of guys that would interest me:

Rick Pitino
Monty Williams
Shaka Smart
Steve Fisher?
Sean Miller?
Kurt Rambis
Patrick Ewing (whatever they're doing in Charlotte, he should definitely bring it here)

not saying all of them would be perfect, but I think at least one of them would be a great HC. adaptable. tough enough. inventive.

I would prefer a more talented Suns team coached by Jeff Hornacek, not owned by Robert Sarver.

You know, the anti Hornacek sentiment is a lot louder, but it is interesting that I keep running across pro Hornacek fans. I agree he would do really well with some talent and a roster blend that makes sense.

I don't know....if you have a beef with Hornacek for losing the locker room, and LeBron having no respect for him and ties to Bledsoe, it seems like a recipe for disaster unless we have a roster overhaul, but in that case, Hornacek would probably be fine if we had a roster overall and went completely young and embraced a proper rebuild.

Judging Blatt's ability to control a locker room based on his experience with the Cavs is not really fair. When you have to control one of the biggest ego maniacs in the history of the NBA, even the best coach could struggle, especially when you don't have any backup from the front office.
