Al Horford or Greg Monroe
Which one would you prefer to have long-term? Is Greg Monroe the obvious choice?
Greg Monroe will receive a max contract after next season once he opts out of his player option.

Re: Al Horford or Greg Monroe
I really like Greg Monroe. Greg was a perfect fit for 1990s, back to the basket, 'throw it into the post', bruising/grinding style of basketball.
But, in today's game...he's very difficult to build around/facilitate through.
I'd choose Horford over Monroe...it speaks volumes when, over the course of multiple years, your presence consistently makes your team(s) worse.
The Pistons got better once he left.
The Bucks got worse once he arrived. That's a simplified conclusion, I know...but still an accurate one.
Also, his defense is atrocious. We'd need to re-structure the entire frontcourt to cover for his limitations defensively.
Hell, I'd take a healthy Tiago before I gave Greg Monroe a max contract.

Yep...Monroe is a star guy not a results guy. He shoots a horrible percentage outside of 5 feet and isn't a great passer so basically road the lane and he will miss alot of shots and turn the ball over alot.
For all his warts, Horford is a better defender a more versatile scorer and better passer than Monroe.

Al Horford for 1000, Alex. Greg Monroe

Why is this even a question?

I was just curious.
For me it gauges how Hawk fans really view Al Horford.

I would rather have Al Horford on his current deal with the possibility of leaving us in FA then have Greg Monroe locked up in a 2, 3, or 4 year contract.

I'd rather Al walk for nothing than get Monroe - that's how badly I don't want Monroe.

Re: Al Horford or Greg Monroe
So I spent a few days trying to come up with a team or franchise that could still use a guy like Greg Monroe. One is Charlotte, which would likely see him as a solid replacement for AL Jefferson.
The other...is Memphis. Monroe's old fashioned style of play is similar to a young Zach Randolph. Since they even came into the league at about the same I age, I ran a comparison of their 6th season in the league at age 25. The numbers are...comparable.
Zach has superior production, but Greg Monroe has better Off AND Def Efficiency. Better TS%.
Reb %, Ast %, Wisn shares. Resulting in Comparable PER for each at age 25.
Zach's career really took off in Memphis playing next to a big Center like Marc Gasol who had enough range to stretch the floor.
Greg Monroe could make a hell of a transition player for that city as they move past Zach and Gasol moves into the latter part of his career.
Grindhouse Part Deux if you will....
Just a thought

We got fans who don't watch teams outside the Hawks. It happens. Don't take offense to it.

Hi hawks fans, out of curiosity how long would any of you (assuming you were in a position of authority) contemplate a Horford for Jonas Valanciunas swap? Would it take you seconds or minutes to decide no? Or would it be something that you would seriously consider?
(*assuming we threw in some late first round picks and salary to match)

It would take this Hawks front office: Seconds to say no. While Valanciunas holds value because he's under club control for a few(?) more years, Horford is either getting moved for a game changing veteran that helps us contend today...or high potential young prospects that we can build around long-term.
Jonas V wouldn't do much here other than take up a roster spot. Hell, I'm not even sure he's better than a healthy Tiago Splitter.
(Healthy Tiago = oxymoron)<--------

Jonas Valanciunas is absolutely a high potential young prospect you could build around. He's only 23, and one of the most offensively efficient big men in the game, in addition to being an excellent rebounder and decent defender. He just signed a 4 year extension at only $16M per year, starting next season. The only reason he doesn't shine more is because Toronto runs a guard heavy iso based offense (give the ball to Lowry or Derozan and see what happens). I'd take JV for Horford in a heartbeat, would be an extremely smart move towards the future, and a perfect offensive center to put next to Millsap.
Comparing him to Splitter is downright laughable.

I created this topic due to some fans not thinking very highly of Horford.
The Bucks have taken Monroe off the market.
