Ernie Grunfeld signed for 14th season as Wizards GM (UPDATE: EG not a lock to return!)

Coach Randy Wittman’s future is uncertain because next season — the final year of his three-year contract — is only partially guaranteed, but President Ernie Grunfeld is under contract for next season, according to a league source with knowledge of the situation, which strongly suggests that he will return for his 14th season as the franchise’s general manger. It is not known when owner Ted Leonsis and Grunfeld agreed to the extension. :x

Grunfeld, who will turn 61 later this month, headed the New York Knicks and Milwaukee Bucks’ front offices before the late Abe Pollin hired him in June 2003. He is the NBA’s fifth longest-tenured chief executive. With five games remaining this season, the Wizards have posted a 440-605 record during Grunfeld’s tenure and advanced to the postseason in six of his campaigns, losing three times in the first round three times and three times in the second round.

Washington hasn’t advanced to the Eastern Conference finals since 1979. The four executives with longer tenures — Pat Riley, Mitch Kupchak, R.C. Buford, and Danny Ainge — have each won at least one championship — during their stints.

Does this mean it isn't officially time to part ways with Ernie Grunfeld?

I think the key question that Jorge didn't answer is - When was he signed? If it was part of his last contract signed last offseason or earlier, then this really isn't news. Ted just has to eat a million dollars plus a year at Ernie's favorite Italian restaurant. If it was within the last couple of months, that's news, and the lack of transparency is as sad as the choice to keep him.

If this is true, then Leonsis clearly believes that luck is the only way to build a contender. It doesn't make any difference whether Grunfeld rolls the dice, or someone else. We've just happened to have been on a 14-year bad luck streak (or is it 37?).
Always remember, my friend: the world will change again. And you may have to come back through everywhere you've been.

You could do that now that he has lost all that weight. (I'm sincerely happy for Ted about the weight. Not about Ernie.)

Here's what I do know now...I've spent about $1000 a year on tickets the past few seasons. That's no more. I hope other people do the same until Grunfailed is let go.

At this point the only thing keeping me around is G-Wiz...everything else about this team is completely unlikable; the players, the coaches, management, and ownership.

I can't tell whether this is real news or not. Just because he is under contract doesn't mean he won't be dismissed, right?

I mean, Ted could eat his salary.

If it is true and the Wiz don't sign Durant... after 45 years, I'm out.

Ted loves to eat, but not anyone's salary.

Well that does not mean much at the moment, there is no context, we don't know when he signed. This was just some guy diggin around and found that he has a contract next year, it means nothing because Ted can fire him any time, he just has to eat the money. Plus that does not mean that someone else might not be running the show. Ted could remain Team president but, we could always bring in a new GM or president of BB operations, or a HC that we give full team control too. Which Ted has done in the past, he did that with the mystics. This is an annoying head line made by a dude trying to get reads off the fact that fans will cringe at the though of EG being here long term.
