...to be proud of our organization, sir Stan Van Gundy in the first place, but every professional we have and how they're management things in this new organization.

Look at nearly every other team. They're comiting suicide, killing his flexibility for years and overpaying every mediocre player in the league. Damn, think about Joe Dumars still in the front office, this summer could be scary as hell.

Thanks for all guys, we're now a great organization with a real plan and a bright future.

Creating positional logjams every season? Trying to put lipstick on a pig and excite the fanbase by bringing in former superstars past their prime?

It makes a man think that he was very, very lucky when he caught lightning in a bottle the first time.

There is an incredibly strong case to make that Dumars lucked his way into winning our 2004 championship, he couldn't have anticipated the product he was making and all the good choices he made in the draft like Drummond (excluding second round picks, he was actually alright at that) he made as they were OBVIOUS moves. Who were we taking over Drummond in that draft? Austin f****** Rivers?

I understand the sentiment but you have either forgotten or are simply too young to remember the **** storm that Dumars steered us into for a decade. Almost every move he made was bad and the good drafting in the 2nd round is mitigated by the fact the fat moron would trade them away before a they hit their peak (see Afflalo, Middleton, Johnson).

Dumars clearly showed he had no idea on what he was doing and simply made moves for the hell of it. SVG has direction and understands the gravity of cap space and not using large portions of it on questionable unproven talent/fits (see Josh Smith and Charlie Villanueva).

Pretty harsh words for one of the greatest pistons ever who played a massive role in all of our championships. That doesn't make his final years with us any less worse, but I think in the process of remembering his mistakes as a GM people totally forget all of the good he's done both as a GM and player. Also, I don't think you put together a championship team that goes to 6 straight ECFs by accident, in league with the likes of all time greats like Kobe, Shaq, Timmy, KG, LeBron, ect...

Why can't we praise SVG for what he's done without ragging on Dumars?

Luck is 2005 Chicago White Sox. The Pistons built and sustained a level of success(despite only winning one championship) for several years.

I also recall the **** storm of Rick Sund that Dumars steered us out of. Perhaps you're too young to recall that period.

Stan has been a great hire and I(along with some others) were hoping he would be hired here after getting bounced in Miami years ago. But there will come a time when fans here will begin calling for Van Gundy to be fired. It's the nature of life. Red Wings fans are doing it right now after the past few years with Ken Holland.

I don't dismiss that Dumars should have been fired. It was time for a change.

We all know we got A LOT to thanks to Joe D, but people gets old. It's like we say we should sign Isiah as PG because he's a legend and we owe him too much. Dumars was a great GM but then he lost his mind. Age takes its toll for everyone. Look at Ainge, he's following the Dumars descent into hell.

Yeah, I mean Dumars inherited a mediocre (at best) team in '00. In his second season Detroit won 50 games as the 2nd East seed going on to lose in the 2nd round. In his third season Detroit won 50 games again and was the #1 East seed advancing to the eastern conference finals. In his 4th season Detroit won a ring.

So yeah thats pretty much textbook team building, vision, and execution. But we shouldn't concern ourselves with facts and being able to evaluate the entire picture. We should base our entire opinion on this ever present what have you done for me lately society.

For as great as SVG has been for Detroit, he hasn't yet won a single playoff series. So in that regard he has a hell of a ways to go to even approach the type of accelerated Pistons' renaissance Dumars provided.

Back to the original point of this thread, yes, it is a great day. SVG did the most important thing - secure Drummond. Then filled in our weakest bench spot at PG and did so rather inexpensively. And now it appears he is lurking around looking for the right deal at PF with a pocket full of cash. Combine this with a solid draft, I'm very much looking for the season to start.
