Hornets signing Ray McCallum to 10-day contract

Post#1 » by BlackOutBuzz » Fri Feb 3, 2017 3:50 pm

@ShamsCharania
Charlotte plans to sign guard Ray McCallum of Grand Rapids in the D-League to a 10-day contract, league sources tell The Vertical.

He's not Munford, but I do like this guy. Our second call-up in as many days. A fourth PG is interesting, wonder if this means something for Sessions or Roberts.

Says a lot about Sessions and Roberts lol.

Would be pretty crazy to pull a Hibbert / Hawes and dump both Sessions and Roberts.

All I know about McCallum is Duke recruited him and he's from Michigan.

Was a stud coming out of HS. Put up good numbers this year in the D league. Hell, why not.

I remember he had a decent run with the Kings a few years back, but they let him go and he signed with the Spurs, so I fully expected him to blow up. Kinda lost track of him since.

After signing Tobey I just assumed we'd stick with local call-ups.

He's a decent player, definitely NBA caliber. I was slightly sad to see him go last year. Not the best play maker but he's a solid defender that can shot a bit and score off the dribble

A) Move to light a fire under Ramon's ass, provide more competition in practice, let the vets know their place is not secure

B) Ramon (or god forbid Kemba) is dealing with an unannounced injury that is of concern to the front office and this is insurance

C) Ramon (maybe Roberts?) is on the trading block, team would rather get someone in here now to learn system before a hole is created via trade

D) Team just kicking tires, looking for more offense from PG spot

Man, the top DL point guard discussion is a close one between McCallum, Munford, and Weber. I love Munford but it's hard to put either of these guys over Weber. Weber averages the most points and is the best shooter of the trio while also being top five in assists and leading the league in steals (though McCallum is also top 5 in steals and assists plus 18 point, 6 rebound averages). Weber also had a steals quadruple double the other night, not sure why he's not getting noticed.

I always liked McCallum. I really hope he can stick around here. Please move Ramon and/or Roberts. Lock the kid up on a friendly deal for 2 years.

Yeah BOB, I looked up Weber's stats and was just about to post that it was surprising we gave McCallum the nod. The plus side is McCallum has more NBA experience (Weber is just one year removed from college), so maybe if he actually does get minutes he'll be able to handle them?

I figured it's more likely a fit issue after they looked at the tape, they just thought McCallum might be a better match for what we do. McCallum also has a solid 25 pounds on Weber.

Who knows, maybe he would still be with the Spurs had they not drafted Dejounte Murray.

Really like the signing. Has high upside. Waive or trade roberts, allow him to compete with Sessions for back up PG minutes and see what he has to offer.

If he impresses after his second 10 day, extend him through 1-2 years at the minimum before he hits the market.

was surprised to see McCollum over Munford, until I saw Munford heading to Barcelona.

still, regardless of how Plumlee & McCallum work out, its a relief that mgmt saw the glaring issues and has attempted to fix them

For a while there was a lot of criticism about our complete lack of transactions involving the D league and younger players, which I think was perfectly fair. We continue to send out 2nds, but between Graham, Tobey, Wood, McCallum, and Harrison, nice to see us exerting a little more effort to infuse the franchise with talent.

The answer was B. Kemba is sick and Sessions has a sore knee.

Nothing to see here. Move along.

Welp.

@WojVerticalNBA
Sources on @TheVertical: Golden State is waiving Anderson Varejao, clearing way to sign D-League guard Briante Weber to a 10-day contract

So it's entirely possible McCallum was our third choice.

And it was...

@IraHeatBeat
Source confirms to Sun Sentinel that Heat made offer to Briante Weber on Thursday. Also had offer from Hornets, but took Warriors.
