Roll-Call: How many non-Canadian fans we have?

Post#1 » by Vlade Divac » Fri Apr 28, 2017 4:08 pm

It seems that there are quite a few regular posters and fans of Raptors outside of Canada. I know there is significant number of Canadians and residents of Canada who are in USA and other countries, but I am interested how many of us are non-Canadians and not residents of Canada.

Welcome! The more the merrier! :D

I doubt we have many American fans.

you're from Toronto living in La, so it is very understandable why you'd follow raptors. how about your fellow city ppl who were born in LA? they'd have either clippers or lakers before raptors.

I live in LA and am from Vancouver.
Raptor fans and Canadian sports fans in general always seem to have insecurity issues, always looking for some sort of validation from the U.S. media and/or fanbase. This thread seems to be another example.
Trust me when I say this, T.O. is just another North American city. There is no real overwhelming positive or negative vibe towards T.O. or Canada for that matter.

You'll or course find ignorant goofs down here who may not know where T.O. is, but that could just as easily be said for Milwaukee, Charlotte, Minneapolis or wherever. Most Americans who have been around the block know T.O. or Montreal or Vancouver are great cities. You find just as many goofs in Canada who know very little about the U.S. (or just believe inaccurate Canadian gov't propaganda about the U.S.).

Are the Raps under appreciated right now? Yes...because it historically has been a team devoid of superstars. It has nothing to do with T.O. as a city or Canada. OKC is a wart of a city - but right now it is a metropolis to NBA fans. Detroit / Phili / Sacramento barely exist right now.

Are there fans of the Raps in LA? Of course - there are 400-600K transplanted Canucks in Socal! There are likely loads of people who follow the Raps just for Derozen because of his LA roots. More and more are going to cheer for the Raps as the playoffs progress.
Much like Canadian hockey fans will cheer for an American team once their local team is done, refusing to cheer for an arch rival (or just any other Canadian team) - you won't see many Laker fans cheering for the Clippers. Hardly any will cheer for the Celtics when facing the Raps just because they are an American team. Most will cheer against Cleveland or the Warriors or Spurs too. The Raps have a pretty neutral image and many fans will be hopping on board hoping to see them knock down a team they may dislike.

Would be better to look at non-ontario fans. The Raptors are not Canadas team.

I'm from Winnipeg and I can tell you that the support for the Raptors isn't as big as you think despite the Raptors being Canada's team.

There are a ton of Cavs and GSW bandwagoners with a few other teams sprinkled in.

Yep same here in Regina. Was at the bar the other night for a game and some goof tried to turn it off for a random hockey game. **** that guy
What an absolute failure and disaster this franchise is, ran by one of the most incompetent front offices in the league.

For the most part. Thing is that LA has a lot of people from all over, so you see lots of different cities represented.

Plus there is a lot of competition for attention when it comes to local sports. The Lakers always get theirs, but nobody cared about the Clippers until recently.

However, overall I would say that the Raptors get a decent amount of attention here. Not in the top tier, but certainly more than most. And that really started to change last year and into this year. You know...When they became relevant.
