Has there been any word on Baynes?
I haven't heard any team having any interest in him. I'm wondering what type of contract he might be offered. I think Stan thought Baynes was going to be out of reach for this year but its starting to look like MLE would be the biggest contract he might get offered and I wouldn't be surprised if no one even offers him full MLE.

None. There hasn't been a single report about a center agreeing to terms. It's a brutal market for the position, but reflects on the way the game is being played. Traditional centers are being relegated to situational matchups/style at best.

I bet he will regret opting out, idk if big men like him are going to get paid much this offseason.

Re: Has there been any word on Baynes?
He opted out of what $6.5M? Will he get that? In the very least he probably gets 2-3 years guaranteed under a new deal so that is a benefit to him.
We have his EBR as well, so we could have offered up to $11M (before we boxed outselves in with hard cap gambit). I wonder if we broached re-upping with Baynes last off-season before we signed Boban or just figured he'd get $12M+ or something and that was out of our price range for a back-up to a player we're already paying $23M.

I'd much rather have Baynes then Boban if nothing else because of his ability to play 30+ MPG on a nightly basis. Its probably unlikely we'd be able to move Boban in order to keep Baynes.

30 minutes of 2015-2016 Baynes, sure. 2016-2017 Baynes?? Ughh. I think I'll take my chances with Boban and our summer league guy, Moreland, when Boban can't match up. At least it'll be interesting lol
It's odd just how many players had **** years last year.

We could still trade either Drummond or Jackson for more favourable contracts and make a $10m offer for Baynes

would be smart but they have to be offload solid players just to make more room to sign hayward officially. unless he takes a huge cut in pay.

$10 mil?!
Dude will be lucky to get the $6 mil he left on the table.
I'd love to be able to move Boban into space and bring Baynes back for $3-4 mil, freeing up the room for KCP, but as others have mentioned there's zero market for centers so I'm sure we'd have to attached assets we can't afford to lose to move Boban.

I still see Baynes getting a MLE like deal for a couple years. Quite a few teams - especially the garbage ones - need that body. Plus he has a ton of end of game experience for a backup.
For Pistons, I think we'll see a lot of Leuer at the 5 - the league has obviously moved that way. Whoever SVG signs as the third center (Anthony!) will wear a suit.

Re: Has there been any word on Baynes?
I wonder if this guy is back into consideration for us. We fixed our tax issue with the Mook/Bradley deal and KCP release - and we do still own his EBR's (I don't believe we renounced them) meaning we could offer him upwards of $11M, which is probably more than he's looking at right now so probably could use his EBR's to even get him for 8M a season.
Of course we only do this if we can deal Boban and his $7M for a player at another position we value more. Just another potential avunue/option to look at.

Detroit renounced Baynes' rights. I posted the tweet in the salary cap thread.

Welp, there goes that.
I guess it does show certain confidence in Boban which is a plus.

Or that stan has moved on from having so many traditional centers. Generally, you want a change of pace from bench players, and frankly, team go small so much now that it's hard to play traditional centers 48 mpg night in and night out.

Which is why I think Moreland signing is a much bigger deal than some fans think. I could see him playing over Boban, and if he plays well, it allowing us to move Boban for further flexibility.

Boban's FT% is better than Dre's and Moreland's added together.

I mean, you could say he is too flawed to play every night, but there is no questioning that what he is on the floor, the ball finds him. Dude is a scoring and rebounding machine when the matchup allows him on the floor. Dude averaged 24pts and 16rebs per 36 minutes last year. Obviously not sustainable if he played 20 minutes per night, but he can certainly contribute regularly.
My guess is Boban plays whenever he can and Moreland plays whenever it's a horrible matchup for him or he's tired, etc.

Re: Has there been any word on Baynes?
He must be regretting opting out. He, like KCP, expected this summer to be a repeat FA bonanza full of ridiculous overpays. But, the market normalized, outside of a few horribly ran teams (Knicks, Nets), and the money just isn't there. Baynes will probably end up with a 2/10 deal.
