That's one weird ass trade. I realize Isaiah was about to get paid and mess things up, but Kyrie really isn't a better player... and they gave up Crowder, Zizic, and that Nets #1 to make the exchange.

Great trade for the Cavs. They got Thomas for a one year deal (same timeline for LBJ in Cleveland) and managed to get the Nets #1 pick? Great way to start a rebuild. And Crowder will help them be a bit more athletic as well.

As for the Celtics, it seems like they gave up too much, although I've been complaining that Ainge wasn't swinging for the fences. Will Kyrie push the to the top? I doubt it, but I guess we will see. Regardless, I love the middle of the summer trade!

Do we really need a Pistons fan perspective on the trade? I don't see why it's necessary when determining the general consensus holds greater value for discussion. Just keep the discussion in one thread mate

I think this is a big enough trade to deserve its own thread. It is the top two teams in our conference trading huge assets. And it is certainly the biggest story in the NBA from now until training camp.

So, where are all the posters who insisted the cavs wouldn't get much for Kyrie?

Isaiah Thomas had the Celts by the short and curlies. He was talking about being maxed and backing up the Brinks Truck - Boston is capped out and would either need to give him that money or watch him walk as a UFA and they'd have to replace him with a MLE point guard. So give the undersized 29 yr old Thomas $180M or have Kyrie there through this season and the next for $50M and then try and re-sign the then 27 yr old to max money deal if everything works out.

Brooklyn pick is expensive to give up but Boston likely feels they have their youth with Smart, Brown and now Tatum - have Heyward long term, a few more seasons of Horford and now the 25 yr old Kyrie Irving.

while i think Crowder is underrated, IT is recovering from a back injury on a short term deal, and the 1st rounder, while valuable, is rather still underwhelming.

Wonder what other offers were out there to have them panick and get this

That'd be me for one.

Zizic is a prospect but he's not on the level people were talking about.

The Brooklyn pick is though so that's a big win for Cleveland.

IT2 getting dealt makes me think Boston are concerned about paying him the max (along with his hip issues)

And Crowder is a quality player on a cheap deal.

I'll admit its slightly better than I expected.

IMO the value hinges on Cleveland retaining Thomas after the season.
Ainge is weird as **** though. On the brightside we should get to see just how good Tatum can be as a rookie

What a crazy trade. I see where it makes sense for Boston as it avoids overpaying for Thomas, and clears playing time for Tatum who they seem high on. They basically exchanged Thomas, Bradley, and Crowder for Kyrie, Hayward and Tatum. On paper that's a nice overhaul, but it may take them some time to sort it all out. It's a completely different team now.

IMO Cleveland made out very well. They landed an All-Star player who plays the same position as Kyrie, plus a solid starting forward who can take some of the load off LeBron on the defensive end. If LeBron leaves, they can start over clean with a likely top 5 pick in next year's draft. On the flip side, if this roster can make it work, they got a great asset in the BKN pick, and may be able to flip it if needed.

I can't wait to see these teams go at it next season.

Props to Pharaoh for admitting this is a haul.

Realistically, this is the type of deal it was going to take to get the cavs to pull the trigger. They didn't take a step back offensively and improved defensively. They net a top pick to rebuild if Lebron leaves.

I don't think Boston will be quite as good this year - too many young guys in the rotation and a lot of roster turnover. BUT ... they just fixed their "window" problem. Kyrie is young enough that he'll still be in his prime when their rookies and picks are starting to hit their stride.

addition by subtraction for boston. they opened up space for their wings and this helps them in the long run while not getting a whole lot worse in the present.

i hope lebron leaves and cleveland gives it the max. helps us out.

I don't think it's "great" for Cleveland.

Crowder & the Brooklyn pick are great, Thomas is coming off his best year ever, recovering from injury AND is expiring.

Zizic is nothing atm

Boston gave up more than I thought any team would but there's so many factors involved for the Cavs you can't call it a home run:

1 - are they gonna play Love, Lebron & Crowder together? They should!

2 - the backcourt is still devoid of any real defense and got smaller here

3 - what do they do if Lebron leaves? Do they let IT walk too?

For Boston it's the usual "plan" of being really good for a longer period of time.

They turned AB, IT, Crowder, Zizic & a Brooklyn pick into Hayward, Kyrie, Mook, Tatum...

As far as contracts go that's a good job by Ainge. As far as taking any step forward now I think their in the same place they were before the moves.

I don't think the Cavs could have gotten any more than they did. Long term it might work out much better for the Celtics but that is TBD and I don't think the Cavs lose much (if any) next year because Thomas was just top 5 in MVP voting and very clutch, and Crowder will work hard and help out big time defensively. Plus they pick is huge because it could end up being the asset that the Cavs need to add a player to keep Lebron in Cleveland... I would assume that pick could land an all-star caliber player at the deadline if the Nets are as bad as we think they should be.

Not quite sure how the Cavs managed that big a haul for Kyrie. He's a fine player... but Cleveland should not have had that much leverage. They got back exactly what they wanted in players who both compliment their current roster and rebuilding pieces for LBJ's inevitable departure.

Ainge has traditionally been a very shrewd negotiator; he must have *really* coveted Kyrie to give up that much.
