Rodney Purvis Signs With Magic

Post#1 » by Howard Mass » Tue Aug 29, 2017 5:22 am

Rodney Purvis has signed a camp deal with The Magic.

His guarantee is likely not over 50k so it's more likely than not that he will be in Lakeland next season.

Interesting to see a combo guard brought in. a scorer who can rebound. Not really an assists guy. This sounds a lot like an undersized SG and not a player that can manage PG minutes. He does project to have NBA 3-ball range above 33% though.

He was listed as an Exhibit-10 contract, meaning he cannot have a bonus over 50k. But the implications of this type of news writing is that he gets the full 50k. Plus he is not likely to be a two-way player; Birch and Payne already seem to have those locked up.

So ---> I had never heard of an Exhibit-10 contract, so I found a nice link that explains a number of very interesting details on two-way contract.
2w10d LINK on two-way contracts

1- One thing that is clear is that Payne can only have a one-year deal.

2- Another thing is that in addition to the near-certain 275k two way players get, from the conclusion of the G-leauge season to the NBA season, the players can make an NBA minimum salary outside of the 45-day window. That's another ~100k in salary, bring a G-leaguer's contract around a 350k mark + a 50k bonus = a touch over 400k for two-way players. Not bad!

3- Also I find it interesting that two-waters can travel to playoff games, even if they cannot suit up in them.

surprising signing. Kind of a "meh" player in college. not a great scorer, not a good passer, okay shooter from the shorter college 3 pt line.

I wouldn't consider a player who shot .372 from the field last season a scorer. His 3% didn't look bad tho. Don't know much about him, but perhaps he is solid on defense or something else which earned him this contract.

I like what the FO is doing, which is essentially mining for talent, leveraging the GLeague and not spending much $$ to do so. The debate is if these guys are any good. My answer to that is that I am not sure, but I like the eyes of our guys running the show right now. If we can get one steal out of this, it is worth it. I think the obvious guy that could be good is Birch. He has the shotblocking skills and the athleticism to possibly be an NBA 5.

From an entertainment perspective, I am happy to sit back and observe. See if the FO saw something in these guys that others missed. You never know what can happen when you put a talented player in the right environment. Regardless it is a low risk investment.

It's good somebody said it.. We need any kind of potential talent on this team. Taking a shot at a young gun like Purivs makes sense.

Are people really going to downplay that this was a good move while complaining we traded our later picks?
