Hassan Whiteside underrated?
You hear about the centers but not much mention of Whiteside and what he's currently doing.
For whatever reason people have painted this picture that Heat were better without him last year due to a stat that was tweeted which was actually proved to be false. People still ran with it.
Also with his scuffles, you have the notion that hes some team cancer despite him being voted the favorite teammate ( from Tyler Johnson, Josh Richardson, James Johnson, and a few others). The team cancer narrative gets over blown.
Hes currently averaging 16ppg and 13rpg in 28mpg. For whatever reason Spo opts to play Kelly oly at back up 5 instead of pairing him with Hassan. His per 36 stats are:
20ppg 17rpg 2.3bpg 60%FG 26PER
He is currently 2nd in DRPM
1st in Drtg
1st in Drb%
Heat are currently top 10 in defense. In contrast they were 25th when he was injured 5 games.

You hear about the "Jokics" and "Embiids" because they are FAR more offensively talented.
Not hating on Whiteside but there is reason why those players are being raved about, their skillset is far more unique.

Re: Hassan Whiteside underrated?
I think he's an upgraded version of DeAndre Jordan. His physical skills along with defensive instincts make him a fierce presence at the rim, but offensively, he's not as skilled the player PhilBlackson just mentioned.
By the way, shouldn't this thread be in the player comparison forum?

His offensive game lacks so I think he gets overlooked. I wouldn't say he is underated though

...and to be clear I didn't bring them into the conversation for comparison. OP originally had them in his post in his first sentence then quickly edited them out once I made my post. Likely realizing he shot himself in the foot by doing so.

He's excellent on the glass and in protecting the rim, but he takes so many unassisted field goals that it tanks his offensive effectiveness.

Yes I originally stated specific centers were talked about more, (obviously everyone knows why) my point was stemmed more on his reputation as a defender so i didn't want that to be mistunderstood. Dont give yourself too much credit.

So then you understand why you hear about other centers and not much mention of Whiteside

Hes shooting 60% has a TS of 63% with those a lot of those unassisted FGs. Hes completely well in his right to make post moves when he converts . Hes not Deandre Jordan, he can create his own shot effectively. When the Heat are missing jumpers, it's sensible to get your most effecient player involved. As every team tends to do.

-1.4 offensive real plus/minus
-1.6 offensive box plus/minus
Whiteside hurts his team on the offensive end. His unassisted field goal attempts aren't effective.

No rated just fine. Its just offense rules. Ask jokic.
There’s never been a time in history when we look back and say that the people who were censoring free speech were the good guys.

He's fine. If we were to do a list of the top 10 centers in the the league he'd be mentioned by a decent amount of people. That's about where he belongs. Kind of like the center version of Kemba Walker.

Re: Hassan Whiteside underrated?
In the last four years, in his 6,100+ minites played, the Heat are just 1 point per 100 possessions better when he’s on court than off. So for all the things he does, it doesn’t seem to make much of a difference.

Re: Hassan Whiteside underrated?
That's Not how it works. Heat only have 2 players with positive offensive rpm. Whiteside is 4th.Kobblehead wrote:Eagle4 wrote:Hes shooting 60% has a TS of 65%. Whiteside hurts his team on the offensive end. His unassisted field goal attempts aren't effective.
He is also 39th among his centers in touches to per game so how exactly is would crippling the Heat offense when he doesn't even get as many touches as his peers?
Picture a pie chart in your head with 3 sections. 46% of the pie is occupied by a score resulting from a Hassan Whiteside post move (whether it's a shot attempt, free throws, an and-1 opportunity, or an assist to another teammate). 12% of the pie is filled by turnovers (bad pass, getting stripped, travelling, etc). The remainder 42% represents a missed shot or a pass to another team - in other words, we get nothing from the post in that possession.
To summarize, the 'true', basic breakdown of Hassan's post play is as follows: 46% score, 12% turnover, 42% missed shot or pass.
Lets compare that to some of the elite post players in the game today..
Lamarcus Aldridge: 46% score, 6% turnover, 48% missed shot or pass.
Marc Gasol: 47% score, 15% turnover, 38% missed shot or pass.
Kevin Love: 45% score, 18% turnover, 37% missed shot or pass.
Al Horford: 45% score, 18% turnover, 37% missed shot or pass.
Joel Embiid: 46% score, 21% turnover, 33% missed shot or pass.
Demarcus Cousins: 51% score, 22% turnover, 27% missed shot or pass.
In regards to his post moves
.91pts per possession is what Hassan Whiteside averages from the post.
Lets compare that to the group mentioned above:
Lamarcus Aldridge: 0.94ppp
Marc Gasol: 0.89ppp
Kevin Love: 0.8ppp
Al Horford: 0.87ppp
Joel Embiid: 0.92ppp
DC: 0.97ppp
Hassan averages more points per possession from the post than Marc Gasol, Al Horford and Kevin Love.

I always read on this board that Gobert offensive game is fine to good. Whiteside is better offensively then Gobert, Whiteside is good on offense.

I really wanted him to go to Portland. That would have been a fun team. He made a mistake signing that multi year deal with Miami. Looks like he will waste his prime years on 8-10 seed team.

You can tell which people watch Whiteside in this thread. Whiteside can very well create his own shot. He's no Deandre Jordan. He's just a bit slow footed compared to the other offensive Cs.

he's like mourning in so many ways, and he'll get overlooked his entire career just like mourning.

I've come to the conclusion that most folks don't really care that you broke one of the rules... they just enjoy telling you that you broke it.
