The Ringer: It's Time to Start Taking Andre Drummond and the Pistons Seriously

Post#1 » by bballnmike » Fri Dec 1, 2017 8:50 pm

Nice article about the Pistons success so far and how Drummond's game has changed, allowing us to run more of the offense through him with the dribble hand off. Also talks about how important Bradley's been for our offense too.

It would be hard to imagine the Pistons’ motion offense working so well without Bradley’s influence. While Drummond has increasingly been the pilot behind the wheel on offense, Bradley is the team’s navigation system, getting a full read of the defense with every rip through a curl. He is a human gyroscope, and some of the Pistons’ best plays simply wouldn’t work without Bradley’s decisive, full-momentum cuts creating both avenues for the offense and misdirections for the defense.

Is there any reason why Ellenson wouldn't thrive in the Dre role off the bench as back-up Ce? I know Moreland was highlighted as offering the Dre package, but he has zero offensive game so it really seemed like a stretch. No way is Ellenson a four in the new NBA anyways. We should be working him out as a center - send him to the GLeague to get used to being pounded on in the low post to toughen him up a bit and get him focused on defense as a center.

In the comparisons of the bench unit being comparible to the starters - I'd think Galloway is more like Harris with the quick release threes from anywhere and Kennard more like Bradley with his smart cuts and spacing. Kennard isn't as quick, but is damn savvy for a rookie.

Kennard is a very interesting rookie is that he really, really understands spacing, and movement. Its not fluke he had 6 assists the other night. He sees the floor and because he's such a deadly damn shooter, he gets a ton of attention and someone will be open.

I am really intrigued with his development as a player.

Oh and this is what's awesome right now about this team;

4 players shooting 40% or better from 3, and one just under 40%

1.)Harris 46.7%
2.)Bradley 44.1%
3.)Galloway 42.2%
4.)Kennard 40.0%
5.)Jackson 39.0%

That's crazy. 3rd best 3 point shooting team in the league.

2017-2018 39.1% 3rd in the league

2016-2017 33.0% 28th in the league

That's due to the sheer amount of wide open shots the team is getting from the new offense.

Oh and by the way, the Pistons are 26th in the league in attempts as well at 23 per game. They should probably be taking more with the shooting talent that they have.

So glad SVG gave up on the Drummond post ups and still figured out a way to give his scorers space.
Drummond's always been a good passer since hs.

Round Peg, meet round hole.
You need 2-way wings, 2-way shooting bigs, and you can't allow low iq players on the court. Assist/turnover ratio is crucial. Shooting point guards are icing on the cake IF they are plus defenders.
Weaver & Casey, govern yourselves accordingly!

I'm not sure I've ever seen Ellenson pass lol... but maybe in a clearer defined role he could handle that well. Vs just jacking up shots in garbage time.

How is Ellenson not a PF? I'm certainly not an Ellenson fan but he's actually extremely mobile and shooting is his strength. He is a putrid defender and can't rebound and you think putting him at C is the solution? Moreland has no offensive game but he has a huge impact defensively and hustling. Ellenson would create a layup line for the opponent. Heck, I would rather put Ellenson at PG before I put him at C...

Cause he is really really bad on defense and is a me first guy he still thinks he's in high school or college being the 1st option.

Slightly off topic, but I'm kinda sick of the term "the new NBA". In NO NBA is Ellenson able to protect the rim and rebound right which is what a center's job is and always will be. I don't care if other teams are running guys out there that can't do this, I care not to join the party.

I agree. People take this small ball stuff way too far just because the Warriors had success with it. GSW is obviously a very unique situation and this small ball trend has already slowed down a bit imo. Traditional big men like Drummond still have a very valuable place in this league I would take them every time over some chucker who is a ghost on defense and on the glass.

Actually, Ellenson's not a bad rebounder. He has a good nose for positioning. He boxes out with his rear end, like Laimbeer. He averaged double-digits in college, didn't he?

The defense is the issue. It's an issue at either position, though. He can't guard most 4's because he's too slow, and he can't guard most 5's because he's too weak. It's not a fixable issue unless he muscles up significantly, then he might be able to get by as a center. He's never going to get by on the perimeter. He makes Kennard look like Pat Beverley or Avery Bradley in comparison.

That gif you posted is a great example of the cuts that open up shots!

I was all about trading Dre. For just about anything. I truly didn’t feel like after this long you could suddently motivate someone, fix his overall demeanor, minimize his post game, and somehow fix a horrendous free throw problem in one offseason. Did anyone think that was possible? I am sure all our passionate posters are happy to be wrong.

I didn't think Drummond would make this kind of progress on FTs. Always thought the "demeanor" thing was a little overstated. I wasn't opposed to potential trades, but last year would have surely been a selling low situation.

I’m possibly one of the biggest advocates (still kind of am) for a total rebuild but I’ve never felt like that was the smart decision. Even last season, it was obvious if we were to trade Drummond we should wait until we could sell high and not low. I will admit however I never though he was capable of turning things around and playing like this...

Who would be a good realistic and affordable back-up center to trade for to put behind Dre so that we could keep the same offense when he's taking a breather or even when out if injured for a stretch?

Bebe, but that’s also because I’ve always irrationally liked the guy

How much does Noel make? It can't take much to get him right?
