No Trade clauses seem to be a lot worse than most of us ever expected. Stanton is going to the Yankees for very little, which is only good if you're a Yankee fan, like I am. It really sucks for the Marlins, who can't afford to pay his salary going forward. Now they're getting a good, but not great 2nd baseman, one top-10 prospect (who hasn't really shown what he can do, but may) and one decent prospect.
The Knicks were really screwed by the Melo no trade clause, until Scott Perry pulled a rabbit out of the hat and unexpectedly got Kanter, McDermott, and Chicago's very high 2nd round draft pick. Yay! Until then, some folks even thought the Knicks would have to buy Melo out to start their rebuilding process.
There's a lesson here -- no matter how good a player is, no trade contracts, as well as long term contracts that extend until the player is senile, are never a good deal for the team. Of course, Alex Rodriguez enjoyed his long term contract, and was still on the books this past season. (He had a deal that payed him $20+ Million/year for years after he couldn't even walk onto the field, but he technically didn't have a no trade clause. Its' just that NO other team would trade for him.)
I hope GMs in all sports come to their senses.
