Tallest Starting 5 in NBA History?

Post#1 » by bdp31770 » Wed Dec 13, 2017 5:21 am

Noticed tonight how the 76ers started three 6'10 guys (Holmes, Saric, Simmons), 6'4 JJ Redick, and 7'2 Embiid. That's just under a 6'10 average. I know the Lakers at times started 7'2 Kareem, three 6'9 guys in Green, Worthy, and Magic, and 6'7 Michael Cooper when Byron Scott was out.

I know this may belong in the trivial who cares slow news day category, but I was wondering if there's ever been a taller starting 5, even if just for one game.

The 76ers passed on Zinger in the draft so it could have been even taller with him at the PF, obviously that could have compromised the chances of getting Simmons the next year.

And add in the fact JJ Redick is 6'4 without shoes. So by that 1.25 or 2 inches the NBA seems to love to add to everyone he's more 6'5/6'6

It's not the Bucks starting 5 though.

Lol @ the Sixers almost having Embiid, Porzingis and Simmons. I don't even wanna think about that.

Olajuwon was NOT 7 feet. Closer to 6'10.

I love thinking about it. Then maybe Hinkie wouldn't have gotten railroaded and he'd still be around to enjoy the fruits of his labor, instead of sitting home watching on the news how Bryan Colangelo is helping Danny Ainge build the Celtics.

Olajuwon was NOT 7 feet. Closer to 6'10.

He’s still listed at 7 feet when you type “Hakeem Olajuwon height” into google. Get that changed and I’ll go with the 6’10 story. Doesn’t really matter either way because a prime Hakeem is going to dominate the lane regardless of his true height.

The most unique would be this one with Piston 5 days ago:

PG Livingston 6'7"
SG Klay 6'7"
SF KD 6'11"
PF Green 6'6"
C McGee 7'0"

PF is the smallest player on starting 5

And the best rim protector. Isn't he really 6'7", tho? That's how he's listed.

Eye test says he's not shorter than Klay and Shaun.

I don't remember the exact year but in the late 90's the Spurs for a while were starting a 3 centre front court of Robinson, Duncan & Perdue. Obviously Avery Johnson would have thrown off the average height but that is a monster front court

I remember 10-15 years ago all-star voting on West when Yao Ming constantly gets most votes to start at center, Garnett is listed as SF to get the starting job, and 2nd guard (1st is always Bryant) sometimes is not PG at all, in extreme cases it is some guard-forward which more belongs to frontcourt line.

So I guess nobody will ever beat Western Conference 2005 starting 5:

G Tracy Mcgrady 6'8
G Kobe Bryant 6'6
F Kevin Garnett 6'11
F Tim Duncan 6'11
C Yao Ming 7'6

Oh... wait... 2019 Eastern Conference all-star starting 5 after LBJ "The Decision" to finally join West :o :

G Ben Simmons 6'10
G Giannis Antetokounmpo 6'11
F Kristaps Porzingis 7'3
F Joel Embiid 7'0
C Hassan Whiteside 7'0

Has to be OKC when Durant played SG. They actually experimented with it again in 2014, pretty sure this is the tallest starting lineup in NBA history. https://www.basketball-reference.com/boxscores/201403040OKC.html

6'3 Westbrook
6'11 Durant
6'11 Jones III
6'10 Ibaka
7'0 Adams

Average height is over 6'9 and everyone but Westbrook has the standing reach of most starting C's

Would be a sick team but id like AD over whiteside (disregarding the east/west format just league wide)
