why is the new FO so transparent
Can someone explain to me what is being accomplished by the FO telegraphing all their moves? In any business, you don't go about telling everyone your strategy and your plans. It has led to a disastrous season affecting the locker room and also reduced the value of some of our players. Now we may even be forced to attach assets to get rid of randle or clarkson bc teams know we need to get rid of them. Why seem overeager and why cause discord in the locker room? Why basically make your employees feel like theyre not wanted (even if its true).
and separately, can someone explain to me why the eff we are trying to trade larry nance? he's on a cheap contract and wont affect the signing of max guys.
when do we hold the FO accountable for this behavior? granted if we sign 2 max guys, nobody will care but judging management ability is about decisions not outcomes. even if we get lucky great, but these two still would really need to get their act together if they want to take this team to a championship level.

Warspite:
Prince + filler for Kobe Bryant
To be honest the way Prince has played and with Kobes injury/age/mileage Im not sure I would do that deal either. Still Prince is more important and he wins the head to head battles with Kobe.

We don't "Need" to get rid of them, we "Want" to get rid of them in the hope to get 2 Max, big diff. But let's hope we don't and only get that 1 star instead of 2 at least for next year

They are trying to control the narrative by getting in front of it. That's really what they've been doing since day 1.

I'll forgive Magic if we can at least get meetings with marquee FA's again.

Re: why is the new FO so transparent
I am for a stonewalled quiet front office. I liked Mitch in this regard.
"Like all NBA teams, we try to improve our roster when we can, but unless a trade has been officially announced we're staying put with our current team. We're very optimistic about our players and will keep looking to get back into championship contention via draft, trade and free agency."
Some blanket statement like that would be my FO's answer to any and all trade rumor questions.
The same messages Magic has planted to lure players here can be sent in other ways, without undermining and putting doubt in our own young guns.

That's just the way Magic is. But when they don't get free agents again now teams can not only use their record against them in meetings, but the fact that they fail to do the things they say as well. Under promise and over deliver.

If Information ends up with Woj, it doesn't necessarily mean that the front office is being transparent. Reporters usually need more than one source before they publish rumors and if you offer the same players to more than one team it eventually ends up in the press. Given how hard they've been shopping said players, it is no surprise that it is open knowledge at this time.

Yup. Probably 80 percent of what Woj gets is from agents, with the remainder from opposing GMs. To shop a player, you have to call other teams up and let them know they're available. Some of those GMs then pass that information on to reporters like Woj -- hey, the Lakers just called to ask me if we have any interest in Players A, B and/or C -- with the expectation that they'll share information they might need at some other point. Quid pro quo, basically.
An example: I used to work as a reporter in San Antonio, covering the Spurs for my last few years before I took a job elsewhere. Kawhi Leonard's agent called our lead beat writer one time urging him to write a story ripping the Spurs front office for not signing him to an extension off his rookie deal, because they wanted to minimize his cap hold so they could take a run in free agency the following summer (which they did by signing LaMarcus Aldridge). Our guy said no, so he went to Sam Amick of USA Today and got him to write essentially that the Spurs were taking a huge risk by not rewarding Kawhi's loyalties (they weren't).
Now Amick has a marker he hopes he can cash in down the road with Kawhi's guy, and can develop the relationship to the point he's a full-blown source. Get a hundred or so of those sources around the NBA -- which takes an unbelievable amount of effort and tact -- and you're set. I also sat next to Woj in the work room during a playoff game one time, so I of course took the opportunity to peek over his shoulder while he was emailing somebody -- Portland's Neal Olshey, with whom he has a strong relationship. Also, remember how the NBA caught Joe Dumars for leaking back in the day, by sending out press releases with minor changes in all of them so they could track down how Woj was getting his stuff.
So yes, while I definitely think it's Magic's natural inclination to be very cooperative with the media, and we could probably tighten up the ship to a major degree -- in sharp contrast to the Spurs, who never gave us anything that wasn't mandated by the NBA, and even then they would ignore availability regulations all the time -- most of the main guys are plugged in so deep they're going to get this information wholly independently of anything the Lakers do.

yes. And I do believe the stories of LBJ's people talking to Jeanie Buss. I think she made the front office switch to facilitate LBJ and PG13 to the Lakers in the summer of '18. She didnt trust the former front office to do it. But in making that move there's obvious pressure on Magic and Pelinka to do something to show they were different than the previous regime. They cant because of the '18 plan. An exposed plan gets any heat off their backs. It worked so well they dropped '19 summer plans in case the '18 plan doesnt come to full fruition.

I agree with this, at the same time it’s pretty easy to conclude that the front office was quite transparent in their plan to pursue multiple max free agents. From there it’s easy to connect the dots as to whom would need to be sacrificed to make that happen. So even if other gm’s or agents weren’t feeding stuff to reporters like Woj, everyone already knew Clarkson and Randle were on the chopping block.
Either way, Magic’s approach has been to talk the talk and write checks with his mouth, this summer we’ll see if he can walk the walk. Til then it is what it is.

Re: why is the new FO so transparent
It's funny you bring this article post thread up.
I was reading How OKC screwed up their core of Russell Westbrook James Harden Kevin Durant and Serge Ibacka. and it really started with Ownership nickel and diming James Harden and not wanting to pay him his full max. then trading Ibacka Durant started to wonder if these guys don't want to pay those players and aren't committed to winning then why should I be here. He was really close with James Harden and his game complimented him he liked playing with that shooter and when Harden left his game got harder and teams started keying in on him. and he saw those shooters in Golden State with Curry and Thompson. I remember seeing how great that team was playing at Staples in the playoffs with us there was the game where Gasol missed the shot. Durant Harden and Westbrook were just toying with us. we beat them the season before and I was like it's OKC's league.
To us Mitch was very sharp in not letting anybody know what was happening with trades. the Gasol trade was out of nowhere. and we got it done. I think the term on here was DO IT MITCH!!!!! he was very good with his trades. at some point Mitch knew we were going to have to build a core. and I just saw Minnesotas core and I see what their building with Teague Butler Wiggins Towns and you go they were a crappy team just like us and they are winning now. Why aren't we winning. you look at Philly with Trust the Process. Embidd Saric Simmons Fultz and they are playing great. they kept all of their guys.
And then you look at us one of the worst teams in the league. and we are trading our core guys. our first was Randle we drafted him took him before Lavine. He's starting to play better and show his skill as getting Double Doubles he's gone. drafted Clarkson in the second round he's a 15 point a game scorer he's gone. Drafted Deangelo Russell hes' a 20 point scorer in this league great shooter ability to post and break you down off the dribble and finish at the rim. and assist he's gone. Larry Nance. skilled player developed a three pointer very athletic smart basketball player can play defense and rebound he's gone.
The only Core guys we are talking about keeping is Ball and Kuzma and Ingram.
That whole core of Russell Randle Clarkson and Nance is going to be gone. those other teams I mentioned kept their core guys together. but if you look at our core. we'd be right there fourth seed in the playoffs and building a championship team with Russell Ball Ingram Randle Kuzma Nance Clarkson. I'd take that squad over any squad. you have a little bit of everything. you give your coach matchups that he can play against other coaches that they can't defend. then you add one guy like a butler.
Mitch built that. there were those two bozo signings but when you have a core like the one we were building you have to keep that and develop that. you don't let the Bozo signings get in the way and force you to have to trade your young assets. for some reason Magic and Rob don't get the simple part of basketball Build your team and develop your young players. you have no team structure if you keep trading guys how do they figure out to play with each other. how does your coach figure out who his guys are. Luke didn't sign here to coach this. he wanted to coach the young core guys and develop them.
it's unfortunate you saw what Golden State did with Curry Thompson and Green and Barnes they flipped Barnes for Durant. We didn't flip any young players we just keep giving them away. and Magic does not value young players. he values signing over the hill stars so he can run his mouth and say I signed a free agent.
Where does this logic make sense. did you see Andrew Friedman trading Cody Bellinger or Corey Seager?
Now you mention that you want to sign free agents. everybody in the league knows you are trading your young guys why should I give you something. why help the Lakers. we know what you are going to do. so you are a player on the team and your President of Basketball operations says the phones ringing Agents are calling. it just puts the team on edge. it puts players on edge.
Jeanie Had this whole thing that she wants fans to know what's going on. she wants fans to know the front office is working. she doesn't get that fans know the front office is working but you don' have to tell the fans everything you're doing. the whole magic and rob was a pr thing to let fans know on Time Warner that these guys are coming to work. the fluff shows. it was a lets change the team and open the door to everybody. it allowed guys like Lavar ball to think he can say what he wants. it's really just messed up the overall team.
Players don't trust the team. and the free agent thing is something we never did. we never were the New York Knicks and Magic is a great player. but he's got the whole front office thing wrong. every time the team is trying to build something somebody gets traded or is getting traded.
and when you look at the Glamour Teams now the Golden States The Houston's Do you really think we have a chance at Marque Guys. Lebron is starting to show a little bit he's still playing great but that decline is coming and he's not a future building block. Anthony Davis is supposedly going to Golden State.
This organization needs to be focused on Building with the players they have. the way you get good is build your core you have through the draft.
