Blake Griffin Injury History

Post#1 » by theBigLip » Tue Jan 30, 2018 8:33 pm

A lot of talk about his injuries and our risk. Let's take a look at his health:

01/06/2018 Concussion - no big deal
11/28/2017 Sprained Left MCL - it's a sprain, not a complete tear, so fully recoverable
04/21/2017 Broken Toe - no big deal, fully recoverable
12/19/2016 Right Knee Surgery - a concern, probably solid but scar tissue reduces athleticism
12/09/2016 Sore Right Knee - "Sore" is no big deal
04/26/2016 Sore Left Quadriceps - "Sore" is no big deal
01/26/2016 Broken Hand - no big deal, fully recovered
12/26/2015 Torn Left Quad - long time ago, fully recovered
02/08/2015 Staph Infection - no big deal, fully recovered
03/29/2014 Back Spasms - if it hasn't come back since 2014, probably ok but backs can be bad

Crap happens when you play a lot of high level hoops at full speed with lots of jumping. Right knee is still a concern, but everything else should be good.

Call me insane, but what if someone put a semi positive light on the games he's missed arguing that its kept some miles off of him?

The knee surgery was actually minor - just a scope procedure to remove loose particles.

I think the risk is being overhyped on his injuries. It is still a lot of eggs in one basket, so in that way we are vulnerable, but not worried about Blake's injury history.

Can we please get Arnie Kander back?

He certainly hasn't had the same mileage problem as LBJ with long playoff runs :-)

He's been strategically resting for large portions of the past 4 years, all in anticipation of being traded to the Pistons!

I was worried about Tobias's injury history when the Pistons traded for him. He proved me wrong with his durability. Hopefully, the same is true with Blake.

Interesting to see it all laid out like this. I think it's an important distinction whether something is a freak, one-off injury or a possible recurring thing.

Same thing with Reggie, the knee tendonitis is obviously a long term concern, where as that high ankle sprain was just an unfortunate injury that could happen to anyone.

If we still had Arnie, I'd feel about 80% better about this deal. But, hey, SVG wants to hire friends over qualifications and a history of excellence.

This list doesn't mention his having missed what was supposed to have been his rookie season because of a nondisplaced fracture of a kneecap that required surgery. Obviously, he recovered well from that procedure.

Ah, good catch. I guess he wasn't officially playing yet so it didn't get on the list.

So that was a broken kneecap. Broken bones may get arthritic later in life but usually heal cleanly with no short term lingering effects.

Also just for some context, this injury didn't even happen while playing basketball.
He threw a punch at someone, which granted was a stupid decision, but not a basketball injury.

We just can't let him get mad at any of the Piston staff :-)

It was kind of a relief, as someone had remarked on him suffering an ACL. The kneecap injury, given no displacement or reported tendon damage seems less ominous. The remainder of the list isn't all that horrifying either. I've decided to be positive unless events force otherwise.

It is certainly preferable to an injury history where it's the same injury or class of injuries that keeps coming back over and over again.

Still, a large number of fluke or isolated injuries can still have an aggregate effect.

Wait...what? Wouldn’t the same “class of injuries” be something like Reggie have chronic knee tendinitis? You’re saying you would prefer something like that as opposed to someone who has injured, say a shoulder and an ankle?

I said I'd prefer someone with a bunch of unrelated fluke injuries to someone who has the same lingering problems over and over again.

I thought that was clear. Looking back, I still think it was.

If Griffin gets hurt we finally will tank no matter what (because we will be unable to win games) so it's a win win for the pesimists here. I don't understand the worries. In the 2019 summer we're getting 40 millions of cap available, one year after Griffin and Dre will finish their contracts. Really I don't see any kind of bad situation for us, it's a win win if we compete and have a higher ceiling than before or if the injuries of Griffin and Reggie make us the worst team in the league.

I completely read your post out of context, my bad. I don’t know why but the word “preferable” really threw me off for some reason lol
