Jodie Meeks Suspended 25 Games

Post#1 » by Kanyewest » Fri Apr 13, 2018 5:37 pm

Washington Wizards guard Jodie Meeks will be suspended 25 games for violating the NBA/NBPA anti-drug program, a punishment that will prevent him from being on the team's postseason roster, league sources told ESPN.

Meeks tested positive for banned compounds ipamorelin and growth-hormone-releasing peptide-2, sources said.

I guess that sort of explains the Lawson move and Sato playing more 2 at least defensively.

It's probably a net positive for the Wizards. It means more Sato and Oubre at the 2.

Not sure I like Oubre at the 2, but seriously, Brooks not having the option of playing Jodie Meeks is huge for the wizards.

Maybe Lawson actually helps us

It's good for the postseason because Brooks can't use him.

It's bad for next year because now there's no way Meeks opts out of his deal despite him not liking it here. No one is giving him money to miss a quarter of next season.

I wonder if there is any clause in the contract that allows the team to let him go? It would save Ted about $8M in salary and luxtax costs to dump Meeks and replace him with a vet minimum contract.

Yup. He's guaranteed to return but as poor as he is on D, he was shooting the rock a lot better from beyond the arc. Made 9 of his last 16 in April and 38% in March.

The bigger issue comes with next season. Meeks has a player option for next season which he’ll surely pick up, and there are no provisions in the CBA in which they can void his contract for a first-time violation.

If Meeks can’t get his suspension overturned, he will likely miss significant time next season, which further complicates Washington’s plans. For instance, if the Wizards were eliminated after a seven-game series with the Raptors, he’d still have to miss 18 more games next season before he could play again. That’s over one-fifth of the season. Washington now will surely have to make some sort of a move to add another shooting guard who can spell Beal next season while Meeks serves his time.

I assume he doesn't get paid for the time off, which would save Ted 25/82nd's of his salary and the associated luxtax costs.

Hmmm. Factoring the repeater tax, that suspension just saved Ted $3.9M. :D

His next contract will be for the minimum, but he'll get a chance to make the vet minimum again down the road for some tanking team that just wants a veteran shooter. He'll definitely opt into the contract with us though. A bad signing by Ernie.

As if Terd and Pringles needed any more excuses for this disaster of a season.

Heh, Meeks might be splitting hairs, but if you want to split them, he could be telling the truth. If you're willing to consider something that helps with recovery as not being performance enhancing -it really is, because you wouldn't recover and therefore your performance would suffer, but often people like to try to suggest they're different - then he probably didn't take anything for performance enhancement specifically. I'm not really shocked that a guy who couldn't stay healthy for 2 seasons and suddenly played in 77 games tested positive for something, though.

At most it will be 21 games because of the playoffs. Maybe Meeks could return during game five of the NBA finals.

This!!! The ONLY player in the entire NBA to be nabbed, SO Wizards. OTOH, no big loss, just wished Sato was more comfortable shooting it more.

A big part of Ernie's horrific managing is that he gives scub-players the player options instead of the team having the option. MIND BOGGLING!!

To be fair, I don't think he does it just for the heck of it. I suspect that Meeks' agent demanded more money for a 1 year deal. So EG had to choose between 1 year at, say, $4.5M versus 2 years at $3.25M. If Meeks actually shot like he had shot for most of his career, the 2-year deal would have been the right call.

It cuts both ways. How many times have we added players on cheap 1-year deals only to regret that they weren't 2-year deals? Deshawn Stevenson, Martell Webster and Mike Scott come to mind.

Does being a drug fiend somehow void his ability to opt in?

I'm thinking Ernie slipped something into Meeks gatorade, taking cleaning up his own messes to another level.

In other news, apparently EG denies all rumors about golden showers, saying he’d never condone urination without proper urinal cakes.
