The only profitable train routes in the US are in the northeast corridor.

The problem is that Amtrak doesn't own the lines and always has to give the right of way to commercial trains (used for shipping).

You would need a dedicated rail line to connect DC-Philly-NY-Boston. Even then, the cost to secure the land would be prohibitively expensive.

Maglev transportation is extraordinarily expensive and barely more convenient than air travel. It simply does not make sense unless there is a MASSIVE demand for transportation to and from the two cities. Understand that eastern China has WAY higher population density than even the DC-NY corridor.

It's not that we're way behind in the technology. It's simply that the technology isn't close to being cost effective relative to existing technology.

LOL the original thread title of Washington to dc in under an hour!? DEFinitely reminds me of my commute when i lived in the dmv.
