2018 Free Agency

Now that we are post draft, here is our tentative lineup:

PG: Conley, Carter, Harrison
SG: Brooks, Selden, McLemore
SF: Brooks, Parsons
PF: Green, Martin, Rabb
C: Gasol, Jackson, Davis

Glaring need is at the SG spot, unless MarShon Brooks is the real deal. We have to recall he averaged 20pg per game and 50% from 3's, but only in a small sample size.

We only have:
Non-Taxper MLE at $8.6 million.
Trade Exception (Troy Daniels, expiring 9/22/18) — $3,408,520
Trade Exception (James Ennis, expiring 2/8/19) — $1,697,250

Non-Guaranteed Salaries

Wayne Selden $1,544,951 7/10/18
Andrew Harrison $1,544,951
Omari Johnson $1,378,242

Key Dates:
7/1/18-7/5/18 — NBA moratorium.
7/6/18 — No-trade restrictions lift on MarShon Brooks and Omari Johnson.
7/10/18 — Wayne Selden’s $1,544,951 guarantees for 2018-19.
9/22/18 — Troy Daniels trade exception expires.
1/10/19 — Andrew Harrison’s $1,544,951 guarantees for 2018-19.
1/10/19 — Omari Johnson’s $1,378,242 guarantees for 2018-19.

Obvious things are to take advantage of the Trade Exceptions for teams involved in the Lebron/George/Lenard sweepstakes.

That would mean using exceptions to help teams clear out space:
Option: Trade exception to Houston for Nene (waived) and 2nd round pick

MLE Options:
Rudy Gay for $8.6 Million to sure up the SF spot while Dillion develops and swaps between SG/SF.
Tyreke Evans for $8.6 Million to man the SG spot.

Evans is probably the most realistic option, but Rudy Gay would be the better option of the 2.

Throw the full MLE to Hezonja, cut/trade Davis and Martin and sign Lucas Nogueira for the minimum.

My issue with Hezonja is that he like BMac went through four coaches in three years. Although this past season was as close to good as he's played. Keep in mind, he's playing for a new contract. Based on how he's played during those years, I would not blow the MLE on him. With D. Davis, I think it's possible to throw him in a trade with another player to get back another solid backup center in return since he hasn't work out as expected.

Starting Wings are a glaring weakness - (both SG & SF)
Free Agency Options
Ist Option - Rodney Hood - using MLE
2nd Option - Mario Hezonja - using MLE
3rd Option - Patrick McCaw - using MLE
I also don't think it is sufficient to sign one individual in free agency. The FO should also try to package JAM & McLemore which is more than 13 million in expiring contracts for MKG/Charlotte, Covington/Philly or Evan Fournier/Orlando. We need clear NBA level talent on the roster. We currently have too many marginal guys.

Demare Carroll/Brooklyn also qualifies for this type of trade

Cross Rodney Hood off the list. The Cavs extended his QO.

I know Reke's shooting 3's well now - can he play off ball some at the 2, or is he best as the lead guard at all times?

What chance do you think he has of coming back?

Given how he played for the Grizzlies last season, I think he has played beyond the MLE the Grizzlies want to offer.

Average move. Casspi can be a threat on the perimeter. decent rebounder, not sure how he is defensively, can he stay healthy is a question I have an issue with.

We needed a backup SF so I'm happy with this. We can try to get the best player available with roughly the 7m expected to be left over for the MLE after we sign Carter to a longer deal than the normal 2 year 2nd round pick deal structure. (At least that is what the local radio guys have been speculating)

The Casspi moves saddens me because once again the unimaginative Front Office plan to have Dillon Brooks start @ the SF position.
Therefore the mid-level will be used on either undersized SG Avery Bradley who hasn't accepted their offer already, or the inexperienced Patrick McCaw as the starting SG. I don't believe Tyreke Evans is wanted back even if his price is within their wheelhouse.

The Joe Harris and Mario Hezonga contracts may also price Avery Bradley out of the mid-level from the Grizz.

What is some of you guys take on Zach LaVine? He does provide scoring for sure. He does leave a lot to desire on the defensive end.

I was thinking about Zach Lavine yesterday, due to the fact that word has leaked out that they were working on something that has not been hampered by any of the events of the past 72 hours. Therefore my conclusion was a potential sign & trade of a restricted free agent which can't happen until 7/6. IF the first part is accurate then you have to leap to which restricted free agents would be worth the investment and secondly be signed for multiple years (sign & trade players have to be signed for at least two years) that their current team may be interested in making a deal.

Keep in mind we still need wing help and that of a starter. My first guess was Jabari Parker, but his ability to play the wing is in question, coupled with injury history and I quickly moved on, even though Milwaukee signed Ilyasova and may be interested in a deal. Therefore I quickly landed next on Zach Lavine who is a wing and whom Chicago may not be completely sold on if recent reports are to be believed. The Grizz have 13 million in expiring contracts with JAM & B. McLemore; filler could be Devonta Davis or Andrew Harrison. 4 yr 70 million plus contract could easily slot in and become an appealing nucleus of LaVine & JJJ for the present and future.

The NBA season official start is 7/6 and this is also when new extensions kick in for Andrew Wiggins, TJ Warren and Robert Covington.

Andrew Wiggins (that's a lot of money, but if it gets you off of C. Parsons, "scared money don't make none")
TJ Warren (Phoenix now is overloaded with wings and 12 million for your 3rd string SF may be a bit too much)
Robert Covington (unlikely since Philly has whiffed on LeBron, K. Leonard, & PG13)

Good point. I hadn't thought of that. It would help clean up our PF position to move Green.
