Honestly somebody should make a "Wolves Cap Spreadsheet" - Google spreadsheet that the user can pop in possible names and numbers and it adjusts on the fly. If I new the cap like Shrink I'd make it myself but I just don't...

Minimum contract. He gets around 2.3-2.4m but it only counts against the cap for that much.

He'll be paid closer to $2.4 million by the team, but the posted amount is what will count against the cap. Same amount as other vet minimum deals we may add.

What exactly does being hard capped mean? We can only afford vet min contracts, is there anything else that it prohibits us from doing?

When Teams are Subjected to the Hard Cap:

Unsurprisingly, the actions that trigger the hard cap are the things that below the tax teams can do but taxpayers (more specifically, teams over the “apron”) cannot:

Acquiring a player via sign-and-trade
Using the Bi-Annual Exception
Signing a player using the Mid-Level Exception for more than allowed under the Taxpayer Mid-Level Exception

What Happens When a Team is Hard Capped:

If a team does one of the above three things, they cannot have a team salary above the “apron” which is always exactly $4 million above the luxury tax line at any point during the remainder that league year (which turns over July 1). Unlike the soft cap, these teams cannot exceed this line for any reason even if they have exceptions or hardship. The league will reject any move that could potentially take them over the line.

Gotcha! Still, that's a frickin bargain.

(Really wishing I had any skill where a company would think of it as a bargain by paying me only $2.3 mil)

Explanation:

In other words, when a team is below the Apron and uses its Bi-Annual exception, receives a player who is signed-and-traded, or uses its Mid-Level exception to sign a player to a contract larger than allowed by the Taxpayer Mid-Level exception, the team becomes hard-capped at the Apron for the remainder of that season. This eliminates any potential loophole where a team could first use one of these exceptions and subsequently add salary to go above the Apron, since the reverse -- adding salary first and then using the exception -- would be illegal.

If a team is hard-capped, it cannot exceed the Apron under any circumstance. If the team subsequently needs to sign a player (for example, to replace injured players) it must first create room under the Apron by waiving player(s) with non-guaranteed salary, waiving player(s) with guaranteed salary and utilizing the stretch provision, trading downward in salary, etc. A team that is hard-capped can sign players to non-guaranteed contracts for training camp or the regular season, but must rid themselves of such players before their salary would take the team above the Apron. A team subject to the hard cap can also sign players to Rest-of-Season contracts during the season, as long as the salary pro-ration keeps the team below the Apron.

The apron is $129,817,000.

Actually, veteran minimum guys get paid the rookie minimum by the team and the league makes up the difference to the vet min. The union wants no disincentive to keeping vets employed.

Technically, that's wrong. The team pays the full amount, and the league reimburses the team down to the (2nd year, not rookie) minimum.

We will almost certainly stretch his salary, in my opinion. .6833MM cap hit for three seasons.

I am stickying the thread for the free-agency period, this is an awesome, convenient resource that does not deserve to get buried.

I'm not so sure we should. It won't create any more room under the luxury tax to sign an extra player for the vet's minimum. So basically it'd be adding cap to future seasons for no real benefit.

Unless I am misreading, wouldn't the stretching keep us barely out of the luxury tax this season? If so, that would be huge for Minnesota to avoid future, repeater-tax penalties. Are you saying we should only sign 13 players?

According to my calculations earlier today, we would be under the luxury tax at 14 players (last two on veteran minimums) and with Aldrich's full cap hit. If that's wrong, of course we should stretch.

EDIT: somehow, I missed that Marks tweet earlier. Now I get where you're coming from. $17,000 is a pretty minor difference to overcome though.

I figured it out, the increase of the salary-cap by $869,000 bumped Andrew Wiggins' starting salary slightly upwards.
