Just a couple of seasons ago, Blue Jays were gonna make this guy President of the team. Rogers wanted him and Dan Duquette wanted to be here.... but Baltimore owner blocked the deal. Jays then hired Shapiro.
Duquette was considered one of the brightest minds in baseball, at that time.
Imagine if he became the Jays boss. How would have it turned out today. Opinions?

Re: GM Duquette fired in Baltimore
Boy did he leave that organization in shambles. What a train-wreck. I still can't believe that Chris Davis contract.
Hard to say how it would have turned out if Duquette had come over in 2015. Would he have allowed the 2015 all-in? Would he have retained AA? He has a solid, if unspectacular record, but his credibility is weakened significantly by leading Baltimore into a rebuild without any prospects to speak of.
In any case, I'm happy with how things turned out. We had two fun seasons, the farm system is in decent shape and we had our window during a dry spell for NY/BOS. Shapiro and co. have avoided handing out stupid contracts and have managed to bring together some interesting prospects to build upon.

His biggest accomplishment was to tolerate Peter Angelos this long. Does anybody want this job?
Is anybody here a marine biologist?

No, he was not.

No, he was not.
He might be confusing Duquette with Dombrowski.

Re: GM Duquette fired in Baltimore
Duquette's another one whose actions are hard to really gauge given the meddling of ownership. Three playoff appearances in seven years isn't bad, given that they're the Orioles, and it's well-known that Angelos badly wanted the Davis extension and placed spending restrictions on amateur player acquisition. But if you leave a team in the sort of shape the Orioles are in, you haven't exactly done a spectacular job.

**** your asterisk.

To be honest, I'm not even sure what a spectacular job as a GM with Angelos as the owner even means. Since they last won the WS in 1983, the team has 6 playoff appearances, and 3 of those belong to Duquette. Having 3 playoff appearances in 7 seasons isn't bad for a GM of almost any team. For the Orioles, it might constitute downright spectacular. And really, the shape the Orioles are in right now is almost entirely a function of their unwillingness to spend on scouting and signing international free agents while also paying Davis a truckload of money. If they had a bunch of international free agents and weren't anchored by Davis' contract, their situation wouldn't actually be that bad. I don't think there is enough information to suggest he's even a good GM, but I also don't think there's enough information to suggest he's a bad GM, either, and I think he was in a position where it was basically impossible to be a good GM. The Jays situation would look pretty dire right now, too, if they had been forced to give Bautista a Chris Davis special and hadn't been allowed to sign international free agents like Vlad, Pardinho, Orelvis Martinez, etc.
Bucket! Bucket!

Re: GM Duquette fired in Baltimore
Good chance Duquette would have extended AA too.
They have a history going back to the Expos days. So did Dambriwski but Duquette actually worked with a young AA.
