Beyond that it’s a matter of fit and need and whether or not Barnes it’s out to free more cap.

I DO NOT want to be dumb enough to give Barnes $20 mil per. He’s not worth it. If they do that they will regret it. He is a ROLE PLAYER. And always has been. They need to not go and pay him like he’s a third or fourth option.

And Willies role can be filled much cheaper and more effectively by a ton of guys.

I feel like we'll offer Barnes around $15 million a year and I wouldn't be mad at that. If we can convince him to opt out and extend for 4/60 that would be a solid deal in my opinion.

That I would be absolutely ecstatic about.

Unless we have a shot at one of the top tier guys. That changes everything.

I had to watch that first Hawks game again when he was putting up 31/15/10 with an electricity that few players have ever had. At that point it was easy to be giddy about his future. In comparison to many games later in the year which lacked “imprint”.

His play has been a point of contention with me on other sites. It does no good to just raw raw support the kid and not analyze what’s actually happening

This actually mirrored last year, the great start to a more meandering year later. Though he certainly improved in the two years

Kid is underdeveloped physically or mentally. Physically in that either the pace we played with, or his body cannot handle 82. Or mentally in that there may be motor issues.

It’s a big question. I certainly hope he’s able to add to his body and demonstrate consistency throughout the year with added strength, because just rewatching some of the earlier games and he was flashing potential star stuff

Two major changes happened at the deadline.

First, we traded away the closest thing we had to an enforcer in Shump for a guy in Barnes who is at best a meh presence on the court. This resulted in a huge change to how teams defended Fox.
Now opposing guards and bigs could beat on him when he went inside without Shump being instantly in their grill. Remember, the East is a different animal than the more flow game of the West. There is a lot more physical and guys who spend most of their careers there often come with a not taking any bs rep. So teams felt free to tee off on Fox and he got pretty beat up in the second half.

The second was that Joeger changed the entire game plan. He shortened the rotation, increased the ministers for key players and slowed the game down and put it in the half court. Now anyone who knows basketball knows that you are far less likely to get hurt in the running game because there is less contact. But in the half court, you get the crap beat out of you - especially as a lead guard.
And being honest, Fox is not physically filled out yet and not totally ready for that physical game.

I think this is a big thing. Bjelica and WCS started out really hot and we were running out the gates. As the season progressed and we saw Giles/Bagley get more minutes, the identity of our offense went through some changes. Removing Shump for Barnes also made a big impact.

The biggest thing to me here is that we are talking about a 20 year old kid and having unreal expectations.

As the great Jerry Reynolds always says, guards and big men take longer to develop.

I don’t know if how hard you compete on a consistent basis is youth though. Trae for example had no up and down competing, even if he played subpar. It’s one thing to play subpar, which is youth, it’s another to not impact

Not sure it’s a attribute that’s age necessarily. Although age can play a role in being underdeveloped physically and wearing down over the course of the season for some young players. I hope that’s the case with De’aaron, and he will develop consistency with a better body

I don't think that Fox's falloff was very big... my 1/2 cent

Did anyone else have a bit of sigh of relief over the lottery?
It didn’t really worry me at all, but I have to admit I looked at the results as I couldn’t watch it live, and I was relieved it was #14.

Didn’t even check it until about an hour later.

Didn’t want to know if somehow our pick moved up and zero interest otherwise other than I don’t buy the Zion hype. Got a laugh at the expense of the Knicks and Celts and think the Lakers are ridiculous because they are all hyped about a pick that gets them a nobody role player at best.

Best take?

Trade complete.

Now we own all our own stuff going forward plus a boatload of seconds. Lots of assets and nowhere to go but up.

Yep - and now don't pull a Philly... keep your assets moving forward.

Yes, that trade was hanging over our heads for like 5 years. A lot of time in our lives have past with it. But man, it’s a relief to have that clean slate and know you can rebuild if you need to (though that doesn’t look like our forecast)

Tyreke got exiled officially from the NBA

There has been many questionable things during the Sacramento era of the Kings, but I still maintain he was the biggest disappointment in Sacramento Kings history. What he could’ve/should’ve been following a 20/5/5 rookie season............. Set the Kings back a build

Completely agree. That, his and DMC's friction and us taking Jimmer over Klay and Kawhi was the beginning of the end of the promising future.

I was happy to see him have some success last year. Too bad he is going out like this. I hope it's something like he is pulling a Ricky Williams and choosing to live with cannabis in his life openly rather than hid it anymore. I don't want it to end badly for him.

Fox got one vote for second all defensive team.

I'm guessing it was from Anderson of the Sac Bee.

It’s not weed. It’s PED’s.

I wondered how he went from chronic ankle/foot problems to totally healthy.

You can't get banned for smoking weed on your first failed drug test. Here is a list of drugs the NBA will ban for. Notice this list is mostly hard use drugs. Evans popped for something serious, not PED's.

I honestly don't think he dropped off at all. I watched probably about 75 of the games this year. Any purported "drop offs" in his production and impact have a lot more to do with the opposing teams game-planning for him better and better as the season ensued. It felt like there were different phases to his season:

1. He came out guns blazing and teams were not quite ready for him i.e. no defensive game-plan against him. He put up great numbers.

2. Within a few weeks, teams started to give him more attention. He looked to facilitate more since it was harder to drive with the paint being more packed in and all the defenders looking at him.

3. Teams adjusted further by completely selling out on his drives i.e. shadowing him all the way to the rim without concern for a pull-up shot. This caused him a lot of problems.

4. In the last few months of the season he finally started taking the mid-ranged pull up with confidence and his three point shot came back. Given the way he was being defended, he absolutely had to take the wide open shots defenses were giving him.

Moving forward it should be pretty clear what he needs to do: continue to improve his shot and handles. That's it. He already has amazing instincts and elite athleticism (you can't teach either of these things).

The other thing that needs to happen from the team-level is that the Fox/Bagley screen-action needs to become the bread-and-butter of the offense. There's no good reason for this not to happen.

Really good points both - and maybe all that needs to happen for this team to become a playoff team.

I might add to the improved shot - improved confidence so that he is the primary initiator of the offense. He often defers to other guards.

And Fox/Bagley could become indefensible. It would also be a big plus if Bagley's TO rate went down and he looked for the pass more often. But I am thinking that will come in seasons 2 & 3.
