Armstrong Dunk Contest

Post#1 » by weezt0e » Fri Jan 11, 2019 7:12 pm

Hey guys...been forever!

So...the ill-fated DA dunk contest!

My Uncle told me a story, around the time this happened, that if DA made it past the prelim, he was going to attempt something awesome. He was going to put on Shaq's giant shoes over his own and attempt a dunk. I also rewatched the vid and the commentators say something about DA telling them about having some "big shoes to fill" in the next round.
Anyone else remember hearing anything about this? Wish we could have seen that!

I doubt it. He wouldn't have been able to walk in them, let alone run and jump well enough to complete even the simplest dunk. That's not a knock against DA, just the way it is.

I just don't see how that would've been considered a good idea. even if he did it I'm not sure i'd be impressed, i'd just be like "what did I just watch?"

Sounds like a joke someone made and then it became a rumor in the circles your Uncle was in.

Yeah but did you hear the commentators said in addition to what my uncle told me?
"He said that he's got a dunk that he's gonna bring out it he needs it that the whole world is gonna love!"
"Shaq and Penny campaigned with Rod Thorn to get him in this contest. He only has one dunk in a game so far"
"Thats gotta tell you something. I'm gonna give you a hint on what this dunk is called he said... "Reggie...I got a lot of shoes to fill"

Yes I remember that rumor.... and Armstrong confirmed it himself in a podcast last summer...

"Yes, I had done it in practice... that was going to be my go to dunk. Put his shoes on with my shoes. It was crazy. You don't realize how heavy those shoes are... and how long they are. It's amazing, but that was going to be my go to dunk... unfortunately it didn't work out that way."

Also, I think he would have been able to walk/Jump...He was going to put his entire shoe, inside Shaq's shoe. I don't think they were going for the win, just spectacle.

true. Might be like the dwight sticker dunk. Where no one hD the idea until they measured the height it was posted.

Interesting. I guess if he was putting his entire shoe in it's possible. Still seems like a weird gimmick, lol.

Darrell's idea seems absurd now, but those dunk contests pre-Vinsanity and post-MJ/'Nique dunk contests were strange.

It sucks he couldn't put up a better showing here. He had too much energy for his own good that night.
