I'm personally enamored with his potential and, as a Heat fan, would like Riles to take a flyer on the high flying PG.

Dragic, Ellington and a future pick for DSJ and cap filler(s) would be my opening offer, but honestly, I'd surrender quite a bit more to nab him.

I'd like to get some thoughts and potential explorable trade scenarios.

If I'm Riles, I'd do this deal and not think twice. If I'm the Mavs' GM, I'd have a difficult decision and would likely leverage the offer to try drive the price up.

Simply put, Dragic is hurt, getting old, and thus his trade value is diminishing moment to moment, and Ellington is no longer in the rotation so he's expendable. A future FRP can have protections and be deferred to a safely projected year. And as for Smith, he's the type of player who can be a one on one iso scorer who is capable to getting spacing and clean looks at will. It's an element that Mia sorely lacks.

As for the Mavs', reuniting Doncic and Dragic I'm sure is something that I assume they find somewhat intriguing, and adding Ellington immediately bolsters their shooting.

Sorry, Beenie, I don't see the value. Dragic is a reliable starting point guard in the NBA. You say he's old. I say he's a veteran. I'd be glad to resign him for MLE his contract is over.

Dennis Smith Junior's not really a good point guard, which is one reason he doesn't work well with Luka. I'm sure Dallas would love to have Dragic with Barea out.

Dennis Smith is more like a short shooting guard. 96/110 (ortg/drtg). He is shooting the 3 better but the ast/to ratio is pretty bad. He would have a hard time getting minutes behind Richardson, TJ, Waiters, McGruder, Ellington, not to mention Wade. I think he is an underrated defender, which is a definite positive.

Note: He is very athletic but has been prone to injuries.

Now what's really exciting is the Mavs are talking about Wes Matthews expiring. If we could somehow dump salary of next season in the trade, my outlook would be more positive. Something like this would be ok, but no picks.

If Dennis Smith is injury prone, forget trading for him. This team has had enough injuries.

However, if the only draw back is he is more an off-guard than pg, that’s fine because Jrich and especially Winslow are proving more than capable of being point.

Mags have about $57m if workable cap space this off season, and right now they have Doncic/Barnes/Smith as the marketable pieces to sell a prospective FA on. If they add Dragic they limit themselves to a single max FA and Dragic isn’t helping convince anyone to come.

If we had a big expiring deal to send for Barnes and allow them to shop for 2 max FAs with Doncic/Dragic as the maintains then that’s one thing, but we don’t.

Not arguing the merits of the deal but "coax[ing] Dragic to opt out and sign him to a longer term deal" is tampering. They won't do it, because if they did, especially with them being our rivals, we will skewer them as they deserve to be.

The coaxing was meant as a hypothetical. Things happen under the table all the time. League can't assume Dragic or Dallas intentions. Dragic has an opt out and has every right to use it. I'm feeling almost sure that with the direction the team is going with Winslow he most likely opts out and can fetch at very least a 3 yr 15 per (45) out in the open market. He's not going to wait another year to test the market. Either he forces us to extend him for that amount or Dallas welcomes him with open arms.
