The best team to build around Kemba (where he is the best player)

Post#1 » by Najee12 » Sat Jan 26, 2019 6:45 pm

Now that Kemba Walker has been named an all-star for the third time and assuming he returns to Charlotte next season, one of the things that has hampered his career has been Charlotte's poor history of team-building. Pretending Walker is the only salary on the books, what would be the ideal team to build around him? Name some players and why you think they would fit well with Walker and what kind of playing style Charlotte would employ.

If Stern didn’t rig the 2012 NBA Draft to keep Anthony Davis out of Charlotte I’m pretty sure the Hornets would have one of the best teams in the East.

But then again we’d probably would’ve traded Kemba by now too because he wasn’t very highly favored within the organization the first few years until Clifford came along and put unwavering faith in him.

Kemba / Hield / Durant / Favors / Jokic

Guys that can catch and shoot(Hield, Durant), create plays(Jokic), and pickup scraps(Favors)
The Charlotte Hornets will win their first round series against the Boston Celtics in the 2021 Playoffs

Our biggest issues are letting opponents get in the paint and score inside (somewhat alleviated since Biz has been starting, but Willy generally gives those points we saved right back) and/or someone who can be depended on to score 18-25ppg (low figure is poor-man's option, high figure is elite complement) within the flow of the offense at an above-average rate. Right now Lamb is out second most dependable scorer and he really tops out at like 15ppg on respectable percentages, not 18ppg+ well above league average.

Obviously all that stuff doesn't just grow on trees, which is why we have struggled to find it, but in my mind the ideal Kemba complement is a two-way 4/5 who can extend his range and stretch the defense when it's time for Kemba to drive to the hoop. Anthony Davis would have emphatically solved all these problems in one stroke of luck, but it wasn't to be. Other guys that come to mind are Embiid, Porzingis, Myles Turner all as high-end examples. I think other guys could also provide what we need on the offensive end to complement Kemba but would fall short defensively, like KAT, Aldridge (too old now, but in the past), Pau Gasol (also too old now), Kevin Love (passed his prime most likely) and Blake Griffin.

Basically I think the player that would complement Kemba best is a big guy who can consistently get buckets every game. Someone who defenses actually have to game plan to stop, and if he can create for others (like Blake Griffin, for example) all the better.

I know we have tons of problems on defense but trying to win with defense in the 2019 NBA is a fool's errand, sad to say. If we just had one other guy we could dump the ball to at the end of games and say 'we need to score' that would have added like 5-6 wins to our total. Put Kemba and the complementary big guy on opposite sides of the court and if they trap Kemba in crunch time we swing it to Scoring Star PF/C, if they double team that guy then we swing it back to Kemba.

He would be best paired with shooters and a top tier big (that doesn't suck on defense).

Kemba-Rubio
Hield-Redick
PG13-Ingles
Marvin-Harrell
Jokic-Lopez

Big 3 of Jokic/PG13 and Kemba. Lots of shooting, good defense and a few playmakers.

That team would probably be under the cap too, lol.

Kemba
PG13
Kawhi
Horford
A. Davis

Two way wings that shoot well, can make plays, and play elite defense on the perimeter. Both are high IQ players.

Two bigs that can interchange with each other on the floor. Either could guard the center or PF spots depending on matchups. They could play a high/low game with either one at either spot, both can play the pick-n-roll or pick-n-pop with Kemba, PG13, or Kawhi, and both are high IQ guys who pass well and can create for others.

Surrounds Kemba with 4 high IQ, very talented two way players who could play together based on skill sets. Another thing is that all 4 of these guys are very competitive and want to win just like Kemba. Team would play together and with lots of fire.

Kemba would be stupidly good playing next to LeBron and a star big. Surround them with guys who can defend and hit 3s at a high clip and you're golden.

Kemba/Klay/PG/LeBron/Davis would be nasty

Needs to be more realistic.

Kemba, prime healthy Thabo Sefolosha, Otto Porter, Anthony Davis, Marc Gasol. I think that is a realistic lineup that would do damage, especially on the defensive end.

I think a better exercise would be what’s the best team you can build around Kemba where Kemba is the best player

Otherwise you’d just pick LeBron, Davis, Kawhi, etc... and let’s be real if we resign Kemba we’re probably not going to put a better player next to him

Wing#1 ... Khris Middleton (Shoots & passes well. Reliable, but not my favorite defender)
Wing#2 ... Otto Porter (Defends & shoots 3s. Solid 2-way guy getting paid too much)
BigMan#1 ... Aaron Gordon (Great all around player, but he's here for his defense and shooting over the past 2 years)
BigMan#2 ... Al Horford (I could name guys I want more, but they might be better than Kemba, but all does it Al on both sides)
My picks:
2020 Draft (3rd pick) - Tyrese Haliburton, Devin Vassell, or Onyeka Okongwu
2021 Draft (11th pick) - Moses Moody
