Does it get boring after a while?

Post#1 » by Gianni13 » Tue Feb 19, 2019 3:27 am

Non-warriors fan, coming in peace.

I just had a random thought/question. Lots of franchises out there haven’t won a championship in decades, or ever. We’re literally salivating for the moment.

My question is, does it get boring after it’s done? For example, do you guys have as much fun following this season as you did when you first won or when you first won with KD?

No. If we start to get bored, we get visiting posters here asking this question every few weeks to spice things up ;-)

You asked 2 different questions. No is the answer to both.

Q: Does it get boring?
A: No

Q: Do you have as much fun as you did when you first won?
A: No. The first one was much more special. I actually shed tears watching the parade... and again when rewatching it. The first one was a culmination of a lot of years and a lot of crap. Similar to Andy Dufresne, <paraphrasing> we crawled through a lot of crap and came out clean on the other side.

Winning the title was always something other teams did, not the Warriors. From bags on heads to seeing Dubs jerseys in other countries. From, "whose the Warriors?" to being accused of being a bandwagoner. Nah, doesn't get old, but nothing beats the first one. (born in '77)

That’s awesome man! I can imagine. Also, I view the first one as the most special in any scenario too.

The first one can be special, but the passage of time can take away some of the thrill. I was in high school when the Warriors won in 1975. The following season (1975-76), the Warriors had the best record in the league and seemed in good shape for a repeat title, only to be defeated by a 42-40 Suns team in the western conference finals.

Little did I know at the time that it would be 39 years before the Warriors would return to the western conference finals, let alone the NBA finals. In between, there were some brutal seasons, spared only by the occasional Run TMC and We Believe seasons. Because of that, the 2015 title in some ways ended up being more special than the 1975 title for me.

Great stuff statsman! Thanks for sharing. I’ve only been a Warriors fan for about 30 years...much shorter than you. And yeah, the 2015 title for me was the most memorable. Such a surreal feeling seeing the Warriors actually win the championship. Never thought I’d see it in my lifetime. Especially after the Cohan years.

I don't think the playoffs are ever boring, but the regular season can be at times (you can tell even most of our players are bored occasionally). Although, this year the Dubs are playing a lot more close games that in recent memory, which while frustrating if they come into a game sleepwalking, can at least keep it interesting. We're getting every team's best shot this year and I think there are some legit contenders come playoff time, primarily Toronto and Boston IMO, but also other teams that can give us trouble like Milwaukee, Philly, OKC, and Denver. If we don't roll into the playoffs prepared, we can get sucker punched much like we did to Dallas a dozen years ago.

First one will always be the most special. Even the season after when we lost in Finals it was still amazing, and then the 2nd championship also good.

I think as a poster above said, the regular season can become boring but still cant wait for the playoffs. Still enjoy it overall

These Warriors championships are the only ones any of my sports teams have won in my adult life, so no. I had one from the Mets when I was 8 years old, which I barely remember, and they've been a laughing stock ever since. So I need to remember to appreciate what we got here. That's why it's comical to me that there are people that come on here and complain about our 11th man Swaggy P or our 28th pick not being an instant success. Cry me an effing river.

When you say "the first one", I assume you are referring to 75 since the Warrior titles before that were in Philly (1956) or back in the BAA (1947). My guess is that there aren't many posting here who were around in 47 or 56, so I am counting 75 as the first one since it was in the Bay Area. I'd say 75 was more remarkable because we were such big underdogs and we ended up winning in a sweep. Remember we won 48 games that year but the Bullets won 60; they were heavy favorites. Nobody expected us to win. But media coverage was completely different then; there were no TV specials covering the parade, for example.

Does it get boring? For me, absolutely not. We never won a ring since moving from Philly until that 75 season. And after that, we went through 40 years - including some really dreadful years - before ever sniffing another ring. I am a Warriors fan, and most of us lifelong fans remember going to the Cow Palace (before the move to Oakland) to watch the likes of Rick Barry and Nate Thurmond. When you are a fan and have gone through those dreadful years, you realize that a championship window is very small. And once it is gone, it could well be another 40 years before another championship; obviously I won't be around then so once this window closes it could very well be the last one for the rest of my life. Most Dubs fans that I know who have gone through the 40+ years of "nothingness" DEFINITELY DO NOT take this precious window for granted.

So was I. And my folks would have killed me if I skipped school to go to the parade - with no TV coverage, I only got to see a few seconds of clips on the news. Very unsatisfying!

Suffered through Latrell Sprewell, John Starks, Todd Fuller, Vonteego Cummings, Antawn Jamison, Mike Dunleavy, Troy Murphy, Stephen Jackson, and Monta Ellis.

No, it sure as hell does not get boring.

When something is broken, and remains broken for a long time, you get more desperate and desperate for it to be fixed. The losing years were full of emotion, because we weren't just a team that made the playoffs and just couldn't get over the hump, we sucked donkeys balls, all the time. So the pain, and then hope, then back to misery, was a constant rollercoaster. Being from afar from California, I agreeably joined the Warriors to ride the lightning, to join the misery of the early to mid 90's.

I guess what I'm getting at, the desperation to fix the team has gone, and now just pure enjoyment remains. They are 2 very different emotional states, and while the latter is FAR better, there's no denying that the hard times brought out a more primal emotion to it all. This board during the early rookie season of Anthony Randolph, the best example of that.

Tom Gugliotta was my rock bottom.

The day we lost Larry Smith because he was due 1 million was also a low point.
