Kings Trade Thread
This has been the most exciting season that I can remember so I hate to say goodbye but with only 12 games left the offseason is approaching fast. The Kings took a major step forward this season and its easy to see the room for growth and improvement. With no 1st round picks in the upcoming draft Vlade and co. will need to lean on free agency and trades to improve the roster. Before we start discussing possible signings lets take a look at the roster and cap situation going into the offseason.
Kings players under contract for 2019-20
Harrison Barnes- $25,102,513
Marvin Bagley III - $8,556,120
Bogdan Bogdonavic - $8,529,386
Nemanja Bjelica - $6,825,000
De'Aaron Fox - $6,392,760
Buddy Hield - $4,861,208
Yogi Ferrell - $3,150,000 (NG)
Harry Giles - $2,578,800
Caleb Swanigan - $2,033,160
Frank Mason - $1,618,520 (NG)
Dead Cap
Matt Barnes - $2,133,542
2019-20 Cap Holds
Alec Burks - $17,304,773
Kosta Koufos - $16,605,050
Willie Cauley-Stein - $14,090,625
Corey Brewer - $2,400,000
Incomplete Roster Charge (2 spots) - $1,780,324
Kings Salary Cap Totals
Active Roster Cap - $69,647,467
Dead Money - $2,133,542
Cap Holds - $52,180,772
------------------------------------------------------
Total Salaries - $123,961,781
2019 NBA Salary Cap - $109,000,000
Actual Cap Space - $-14,961,781
Potenial Max Cap Space - $37,218,991
Overview
The Kings can easily create roughly $25m in cap space by waiving Ferrell/Mason and renouncing the rights to Burks, Koufos, and Brewer. Thats with WCS's $14m cap hold. If they choose to renounce the rights to Willie the cap space number will jump to $37m
Look Ahead: Key Players Expiring after the 2019-2020 season
Buddy Hield
Harrison Barnes
Bogdan Bogdonavic
Nemenja Bjelica

Re: NBA Free Agency 2019- Scores Edition
It'll be interesting to see if we let Willie walk and clear out that $37 million in cap space what we do with it. Do you think we'd be more likely to go after a wing and play Barnes as more of a small ball 4, allowing Giles to still come off the bench or start depending on the matchup, or do we go after a rim protector?
Personally, I feel like we should go after a stop gap big, someone that can start to open the season and then transition to the bench once Giles is fully ready to take over that starting spot. I would look at a guy like Robin Lopez or maybe an Aron Baynes. A big body that won't get thrown around on the block.

Re: NBA Free Agency 2019- Scores Edition
Interesting what position they will try to address first. WCS sure won’t be back, but I’m not sure the staff doesn’t see Barnes as a PF going forward. I guess it depends on how they view Bags best position, or what they think of Giles
Center isn’t as deep as last year (sigh, Capela/Nurkic, sigh). Vucevic will have plenty of suitors, starting with Orlando who was rumored to have already dangled Bamba. I think the best players attainable might be wings. Players like Butler/Middleton might go to the highest bidder, as I don’t see their current teams paying a ton and the rest of the league lining up to give them a hefty deal like Vucevic.
There are some quality 4s too, but I’m assuming the players we already have might be lined up there

I'm still not sure whether the better option is to just go after a shorter term stopgap big man until Giles can take over. Someone like Robin Lopez I think could be a good fit and would be a nice backup once HG enters the starting lineup. Vuc is going to be expensive and I think it would be a better route to use that money to go grab a stopgap and another solid wing. I think picking up Robin Lopez and Aminu would be better than using that money on Vucevic.

Great point - I don't know the answer(s). I guess it will depend on if Vuc wants to be here, what he costs and how Vlade has the cap played out in his mind.
I can say, I don't think Robin Lopez in the answer - he isn't a prolific defensive rebounder or great rim protector.

I prefer Dewayne Dedmon. He will be 30 when next year begins. Hes been a plus defender nearly his entire career and has recently added a 3pt shot to his game. I really think hes absolutely the best choice. Hes a decent rim defender, likely wont be all that expensive and will be happy starting and playing about 20-24mpg.
I agree, the next thing id want to do is grab a decent backup wing who plays defense, Danny Green is ideal but I think he may end up being too expensive. Trevor Ariza may be a cheaper more attainable player. Aminu is nice but I see him more as a full time 4.
If the 37 million figure someone mentioned earlier is accurate I wouldnt mind something like 2/18 for Dedmon, and 1/15 for Green or 2/20 for Ariza. I loved having cap space open in the middle of the season. Plus we need to get ready for extensions next year.
Lastly id tell Bjeica either he loses weight to improve his defense and endurance, or he simply wont get minutes. Assuming he comes in next year in better shape -
If we roll into next year with
Dedmon/Giles
Bagley/Bjelica
Barnes/Ariza or Green
Hield/Bogdan
Fox/Yogi
This is absolutely a 50 win team. Defense would be significantly improved having Dedmon/Barnes for a full season and Ariza or Green off the bench. Its not a sexy offseason, but its the one we need. At this point im looking at fit, we have our young super team.

I mentioned Dedmon in the post below yours. Brook is also another fantastic option, hes not the rebounder was all want but his 3pt shooting will open the floor for Bagley and hes one of the best shot blockers here.
My concern with Brook is that he took a discount this year, and at the age of 31 he will likely be looking for his last decent payday.

I'd definitely be on board with Dedmon as well, I was hoping we would pick him up at the deadline when the Lin rumors were circling.

Re: NBA Free Agency 2019- Scores Edition
The NBA has informed teams that the league’s salary cap will be set at $109 million for the 2019-20 season and at $118 million for the 2020-21 season. The luxury tax for 2019-20 will be set at $132 million, and at $143 million in 2020-21.
I left Mason in - but he isn't guaranteed. And with Fox, Ferrell, Bogs and Hield - not really needed except as insurance - so he probably stays. So, they could definitely afford a max contract but... they will have Barnes, Bogs, Hield in 20-21 and Fox in 21-22.

Violent agreement.
Cherry picking but... still not sold on Giles at C, I think he would wear down quickly there. Guessing more like:
Dedmon/Bagley/Bjelica
Bagley/Giles/Bjelica
Barnes/??
Hield/Bogdan
Fox/Yogi
BTW, watching Ariza and Green a lot this year. Ariza is aging quickly and Green really can't play SF any longer - they just blow right by him. But you are right, not a lot of choices at SF:

Ya i know your feeling on Giles at Center. I think whoever plays Center between Giles/Bagley isnt all that important, as long as the 2 of them share the court often.
Im a little confused by your post on Green though. We're talking about Danny Green here, he spends most of his time at the 2. His lineups this year, #1 he spent at the 2, and #2 he spent at the 3. I think he may be a little undersized for the 3 but his excellent defense and decent wingspan allows him to make up for that.

Ah, he would be perfect. I thought you were thinking Jeff Green

We got torched again last night - although it is just one game and a small sample size, I think it reinforces the need for a rim protector, defensive anchor.

You guys need a center?
What about the elephant in the room?
Boogie!
He left the Kings on good terms right?
Problem is he’d take shots away from the young core, Fox, Hield, Bagley.
But he had a great game against Nokic last week.

Sacramento, the city, and Boogie parted on good terms. Boogie and Vlade did not. It wouldn’t work. Fans don’t want it to happen as we are done with his antics and he just doesn’t fit with the play style.

Re: NBA Free Agency 2019- Scores Edition
I wonder about the Kings' play style long term though.
Kings obviously had one of their best seasons in several years and the high pace is well-suited to the modern game and the young players the Kings have.
But it's always easier for opponents to slow down the game, especially in the playoffs.
So is this a long-term strategy or just a transitional one for now? Jorger gets a lot of credit for changing from grit and grind to pace and space but is he the ultimate answer at coach?
For instance, will he keep his job if the Kings don't make the playoffs next season? Yes the West if very competitive but I think expectations have been raised and before all the young players are eligible for their second contracts, Kings would need to see them in the playoffs to see how they do, whether their games translate to the playoffs.
Kings could make the playoffs and be one and done but you at least want to see them compete hard, not be overwhelmed. So they could be knocked out in the first round but if the Kings young stars are performing well, that helps make longer-term decisions on them.
Plus you want them to have that experience, to see if it will drive them to continue to improve their games.
Jorger may not be able to get them to the playoffs next season so the Kings may have to look for another coach, who may not emphasize pace and space at the price of defense.

Re: NBA Free Agency 2019- Scores Edition
I think the D is a bit more about personnel than defensive (or offensive for that matter) schemes. We started the season with a very undersized SF that rebounded like a PG. We have a C who really isn't a good defensive rebounder and certainly isn't much of a rim protector.
With Barnes at least you start the season in a better position at the F position. Especially if you believe that Bagley will get to play PF instead of C. Barnes/Bagley > Shump/Bjelica.
Now, if you could add either a really good stretch C that rebounds or a rim protecting high volume defensive rebounder - then your defense will take a huge jump.
This is Vlade's off-season to put a bit of polish on the roster. He needs that C in the worst way.

Now, if you could add either a really good stretch C that rebounds or a rim protecting high volume defensive rebounder - then your defense will take a huge jump.
