Will Cavs try to win this season?

Post#1 » by Richfield » Sat Jun 22, 2019 7:06 pm

After noticing the Atlanta Hawks New Orleans Pelicans (edit; thank you Stillwater) own our first round pick in 2020 if it lands past a top-10 pick, I have a fear the Cavs won't be trying to win as many games as possible this season.

I get the "development" narrative, but I think that should include trying to win every game.

When it comes to roster moves, who Cavs keep, who they trade, and when, it seems like the Cavs front office has a level of control over whether Cavs have their first round pick next season. This scares me.

I am worried that means Love is gone for less than what he's worth for future picks or unproven talent, sooner than later, and that the team won't have a chance to experience the type of success they're capable of this upcoming season. I fear this will stunt our growth moving forward, and make things harder for our young players. There will be more turnovers, less playing off the talent of Love or others if traded, less learning and experiencing how doing the right things equate to winning.

I'd love for the Cavs to develop their basketball team without regard to draft position.

Do you think this pick owed to Atlanta (top-10 protected) will affect how the Cavs approach the upcoming 2019-2020 season?

I bet we'll try to win, but won't be good enough to get out of the bottom 10

The Cavs wanted to try and win last year, then everyone got hurt, and that went out the window. If everyone is healthy this year I expect them to try to win again and maybe even push for the 8th seed depending on how players develop, specifically our rookies and Sexton, and moves made by other teams.

This is looking arguably like the most probable outcome.

I count about 7-8 teams I'm pretty sure the Cavs can have a better record than. That puts us anywhere between 1-11 in draft position after the lottery, I think.

If Cavs are right on the borderline like that come February, hoping it doesn't affect what we decide to do at the trade deadline.

Last season / draft lottery taught our FO that you don't need to tank to get a top 5 pick. I think we'll naturally be bad, but not as bad as last season.

I think the Cavs are okay with any scenario that doesn't involve us conveying a late lottery pick. If we're sitting and no. 12 in February, you can expect to see some load management and player development moves.

they will try to develop the young core and if it equates to winning they will live with it.
Odds are they win 3 or 4 more games max next season if Love is traded and maybe 10-12 more if he plays all season.
Their defense is not going to be even as good as this past season by the looks of it.
ATL traded the Cavs 2020 top 10 protected to the Pels. and if it doesn't transfer next season becomes 2 seconds which is nothing.
I think they will score a ton of points and still lose a ton of games with no chance of losing the pick.

I don’t think falling outside the top 10 will be an issues.

another possibility that still exists in picking up a mid 1st projected 2020 for Smith before next week.
This could lessen their concerns with retaining their own, but in the end won't be good enough next year to lose the pick and if for some reason they take a dramatic leap and are... then who cares

same situation this past year

the team was probably good enough to get out of the bottom 10 until the injuries

similarly this year, if we're healthy (and the rookies can play a little) we'll be outside the bottom 10 unless we sell off veterans at the deadline

According to multiple sportsbooks, the Cleveland Cavaliers' possess an over-under win total of 23.5 for the 2019-20 season -- the lowest in the entire NBA.

Sounds about right if they trade Love at the DL might even be over the actual win total if they move Love this summer.
The defense is going to be terrible and this year they are obviously experimenting with developing an offense with a few potential core players getting reps. They probably have no chance to be better than 3rd worst even with Love if they don't add some defenders.

I think I'd take the over on that bet.

That's an easy over bet.

Cavs trying to win and expecting to lose is the most likely scenario

If they selected Culver and actually had a well-rounded team they could've at least "competed", but you can't fault them for taking the better player; it will be a repeat of last year. Worse chances than we had at the beginning of last season imo.
