For everyone who keeps calling JJ a master GM, don't forget that if it hadn't been for two even more incompetent front offices we could very well be starting Dillon Brooks and Terry Rozier this year...

Indiana did something that Colangelo (or even McDonough) would have done. Sarver and JJ did what idiots do...they were part of a bidding war.

Let's be real here. They're the Suns and until the image of the franchise improves - they're always going to have to overpay to even tempt high caliber starters to come to Phoenix.

So what you are saying is the suns are better than the Lakers next year and AD takes his talents to Phoenix? :nod:

But like most players he can absolutely be passable on that end with better effort and attention to detail. Those two things go a long way to not being bad as a defender.

Two factors have probably played a part in how bad he's been. One is while its not a valid excuse it's human nature to let up a little bit when you're getting blown out. The second reason is simple fatigue, that is a little more of a real valid excuse because when you have to carry such a big usage rate on offense it will wear you done and impact your D. With Rubio taking some of the playmaking and Ayton taking more of a scoring load this is something that hopefully can improve this year. Also in theory they should be a deeper team so can shave some minutes off his workload.

I'd like to say I think he can become an average defender, but when you are at the bottom of the NBA after 4 years, it's likely not in the cards and I don't think it's something he focuses on improving. The lack of awareness on off ball defense is alarming at this stage in the game.

I didn't like it from Ayton which is a huge weakness for him but he's already better than Booker at that. He just plays a more important position from a defensive standpoint which is why it is talked about quite a bit. We really need Ayton to be an elite defender if we plan on getting to the playoffs in the west, and especially advancing. Booker can possibly be hidden if we have 4 other elite defenders on the floor at all times.
You can absolutely hide him, plenty of good teams have a guy or two they have to hide a bit at the wing or guard spots. It's not like he has to be good, just cleaning a few things up can make him not terrible. The good thing is he's not small so it's not like he's drawing dead.

Oubre putting it all together defensively would help booker a ton because then you could always have one of him or Mikal along side booker and let them guard the better wing.

Yeah, I think he can be hidden but mentioned we need 4 solid defenders in that case. Rubio is solid, and Bridges is really solid, but Saric and Ayton are well below average. And if Oubre starts that another below average guy, though he can play decent on ball at times and seems more motivated to try on defense most of the time at least.

13. Phoenix Suns
Average wins: 38.0
Playoffs: 22%

Having won only 19 games last season, the Suns are forecast for the biggest improvement in the league this season. Squint hard and Phoenix had the makings of a competitive team last season, outscoring opponents by 0.5 points per 100 possessions in the 180 minutes Deandre Ayton, Devin Booker, Mikal Bridges, and Kelly Oubre Jr. played together, according to NBA Advanced Stats. Add reliable veterans Ricky Rubio and Dario Saric to that group and the Suns could leap out of the West cellar.

That's giving McD way too much credit. All Indy had was cap space this off season and they still managed to mostly replace Bojan's production while picking up Brogdon to really build out a solid experienced team. McD throughout most of his tenure had a crap ton of cap space, a ton of attractive assets and he just hoarded it and never really did anything useful with it aside from some savvy moves at the very beginning and picking up Bridges in his last offseason.

I hate the hypothetical signing of Terry Rozier as much as the next guy and our front office being interested in him wasn't something I wanted to hear, especially if we were giving him anything near what the Hornets gave him. But, in the front office's defense, our semi-realistic free agent market was basically Rubio, Rozier, Beverley, and Collison. Rubio looked to be married to the Pacers before the Brogdon surprise, Beverley said he turned down the Kings offering a contract close to Rubio, and Collison found God and retired. There's a chance we just thought Rozier was our last option before the CoJo's of the world lol.

2k hating hard. Booker 86 but CJ 87? That’s a lie. Book is at least 88. Ayton at least 85. Oubre at least 80. Rubio at least 80. 2k getting worse every year

If 2K puts the Suns players individually at what they are supposed to be, people will be upset that the team is much better than they expect them to be, so they artificially have to handicap them in the game.

Same as how they have to artificially raise up Kuzma, Tatum and Mitchell's rankings/grades as opposed to what they really should be.

so much bias...

2k19 rating vs 2K20 rating

Suns
Booker 88 -> 86
Ayton 84 -> 83
Oubre 79 -> 78
Bridges 75 -> 75
Saric 77 -> 77

Lakers
Lebron 96 -> 97
Kuzma 83 -> 84
Green 76 -> 77
Rondo 75 -> 76

I guess everyone on the young suns is going to have 0 development and get worse after this offseason... while big market teams like the Lakers even get improvements from their vets. Should have traded Ayton for Kuzma when we had a chance.

Kuzma really getting gassed up for a PF that can’t make 3s, can’t play defense, can’t rebound, and doesn’t exactly have a ton of upside. But we already know that Lakers and Celtics players will get this treatment, it’s nothing new.

I think that 2K is fair rating players.

Everyone has an opinion, but I think they are realistic.

Booker ended the season putting his best individual numbers (those 50+ games), and that is why at that moment he was 88. Then he got injured.

They have adjusted to start the season and knowing how bad Booker defends (at least for now) it is not strange that he is rated at 86.

I wonder how much of a different there is for Warren's rating. Wouldn't be surprised if he's a few points higher.
Probably the Suns effect. They assume a player will be better with another team and worse with us.

Dude - Kuzma rating is trash.

Kuzma is garbage! He should be around a 75.

I don’t see why Booker is going to play worse defense then last season. I actually expect a big improvement on defense with the new roster additions that will reduce Books offensive load.

Javale Mcgee is 80 and Ayton is 82.

Come on now!!!!! if Lakers had Ayton with that team next year they would be locks for western conference championship

Return to Phoenix Suns
