Mitchell Robinson's ceiling

Post#1 » by contestedlayups » Wed Jul 10, 2019 1:43 pm

I've seen enough of him to be able to say that he will win the 2019-2020 MIP and make an all-defensive team this year, potentially a 1st team. He sets excellent screens and is the difference defensively, especially when switching on to guards. Averaging a double double with leading the NBA in blocks and FG% is easily in his wheelhouse.

Let's hear it from all the Knicks fans!

I can see him leading the league in blocks for multiple years. He has that instinct

The use of his left hand to block shots is elite. He can stay in front of perimeter players and if he gets blown by, he can chase down blocks. He has a nice touch around the rim. He plays effortlessly. The problem with Robinson is he tries to block everything and commit dumb fouls. His ceiling is DPOY. He needs to develop a post game and a short jumper before he can turn into an All-NBA player.

A great summary, both on the good and bad parts of his game. I love his aggressiveness on defense, how he seems to take it personally when somebody tries to score on him. His weaknesses--particularly the dumb fouls--come out of this aggressiveness, but are all fixable. I think he's going to be a game-changer on defense for years to come.

The all defense team is still by position, so despite him being an abnormally high impact defender because he’s a Center, he’s probably never going to be all defense. We’ve got like Rudy and AD for recent future and then even when Robinson comes into his prime he’ll be competing against JJJ, Myles Turner, and draft prospects to come like James Wiseman.

He reminds me a lot of the Nets Sean Williams from a number of years back - doesn't have the substance abuse problems so his career shouldn't go the way of Sean's but in terms of strengths and weaknesses they're very similar. A very young Amir Johnson is another player that Robinson has similarities with...

If we're talking absolute best case scenario - regardless of likelihood of reaching that level - I guess Marcus Camby would be my comp.

A better Gobert. But he needs to chill with his fouling

His focus comes and goes too. Sometimes it looks like his head is elsewhere, but when he's focused he's a game-changer.

His ceiling is any traditional DPOY center (Camby, Gobert, Mutombo) with a better ability to switch onto guards and contest perimeter shots. I think he led the league in blocked 3s last season as a rookie.

the 2 months he was around deandre did wonders for mitchell robinson, and now i'm guessing it's taj gibson's turn to pass some knowledge.

he does try and block every shot, because he believes he can block every shot.

i just love how effortlessly he flies, he would've been a top 10 pick last year for sure.
LOL Y U MAD THO?

Prime Serge Ibaka. He was good.

he has pretty sick block potential, he'll be an elite rim protector for years...offensively is essentially just a diver/roll man at this point.

possibly Rudy Gobert type ceiling, but maybe not quite as good defensively.

He kinda reminds me of what Larry Sanders could have been for the Bucks if he were mentally stable

Another thing I do not understand about the Knicks, why are they surrounding him with players who make his play and development more difficult. The new players mostly need space inside the paint and are somewhat questionnable defenders.

It will be interesting to see if Robinson develops more in the direction of Gobert (DPOY and defensive fixpoint) or Whiteside or somewhere inbetween (Jordan?). I'm a rooting for him and hope he will be a perennial defensive player of the year candidate.
