Re: Players To Target With $12+ Million TPE
A guy I like is John Henson. The only big men on the roster are KP, Kleber, Powell, and Boban.
KP's gonna have his load managed for many reasons, ranging from his stamina, his injury history, and MAYBE his legal issues.
Boban will give you like 15 min a night, and as we all know, he's not that young or athletic. He's the thick-bodied big man on the team, so his minutes will depend on the matchup.
Powell and Kleber are solid guys, but if KP's out, and the Mavs have to rely on these two guys for minutes at the 4 and 5, then they'll need someone else.
Sure, DFS and Roby might be able to get by at the 4 at times, and the team could promote Kostas, Henson has a good wingspan, can shoot the 3 now, blocks shots, catches lobs, and rolls to the rim. We all know he can play defense, but he gets a good amount of offensive rebounds for the amount of minutes he plays.
Henson's main issues are how skinny he is, his lack of offensive moves, poor free throw shooting, and he has a tendency to miss several games per year. The most he's played in a season is 76, and prior to that it was 70. The other seasons he's played 63, 67, 57, 58, and 14. You could also throw in his 3 point shooting as a question mark, but hey, Kleber and Powell could both work on their 3 ball too.
Henson's not in the Cavs' long-term plans and is 28 right now (29 in December). His cap hit for this season will be $9,732,396, and his contract expires at the end of this year.
If the Cavs want a 2nd round pick in return as well, then I'd do it. Multiple 2nds would be too much for sure though.
Getting Henson would put the Mavs at 15 players on the active-roster, so some of you all may be turned off by that idea, but the way I see it, if Kostas, Reaves, Macon, or Roby were to get promoted to the active roster, then the Mavs would just waive someone like Broekhoff since they already have Seth Curry.
Regardless, I like the idea of using the TPE as soon as possible, because that means the sooner the Mavs can then (hopefully) combine the new player's salary with Lee's to make a run at someone in the $20+ million range. I'm not sure who that person would be at the moment, but there will be players out there for sure. And if you pull off that deal, then you do open up another roster spot, which could then go to a guy like Kostas, Reaves, Macon, or Roby, or to someone that receives a buyout around the trade deadline.
If they make the move for Henson, then here's what the team would look like.
C: Powell/Boban
PF: KP/Kleber/Henson
SF: Luka/DFS/Justin Jackson
SG: THJ/Curry/Lee/Broekhoff
PG: Delon/Brunson/Barea

We don’t need any bigs, we need SG/SF.
Vince Carter, Luc Mbah a Moute, and Simba are the 3 Id look at

Really? We have 4 bigs. One of them hasn't averaged more than 12 minutes per game over a whole season. Another hasn't played for a year and a half and the owner publicly admits, he's going to be rested over the course of the season. We're left with two players over 6'8. Do you think that is enough for the grind that is the NBA regular season? I don't. I feel the mavs need another big body.
I'd be satisfied if either Kostas or Roby are capable of playing at a NBA level but I doubt that... I know it's not very likely the Mavs could get a really good player with the FAs practically dried up. So I'd prefer a young guy with potential to get better (Diallo?), or a veteran, that can add another dimension to the mavs besides being just a back up big body. Let's say a 3pt specialist, or a blocking monster or sth.
We literally have 7 wing players 6'5 to 6'8 tall, if we're set at any positition, it's the sg/sf position imo.

Kostas and Roby are 100% not ready for the NBA level that is clear as the water from a spring -_-

Yep, this team needs another big more than it needs another wing. As of right now, Lee is still on the team, and he counts as a wing. Trade the TPE for someone ASAP, then combine that player with Lee 2 months later and you can upgrade somewhere, and then sign whoever you want to the other position.
Ideally they upgrade at the 4/5, because Reaves might be a TWP (technically an Exhibit 10 player right now) that can also play on the wing.

I like the idea of acquiring Tony Snell now tbh. But only if he is for sure flipped in a trade later. That way the Mavs maximize the TPE they have available to them.

Compared with one-dimensioned player on unwanted contract, I'd rather take VC. Potentially, VC offers more help than Jackson or Hardaway.

VC would be cool, but the team needs another big right now tbh.

Howard will get let go from his current team according to rumors and that would solve a problem if he chose to come here.
Howard Powell Boban
KP Kleber Roby
Luka Jackson DFS
Curry THJ Ryan Reaves
Wright Brunson Barea

His health may not be that great but we can use kid gloves to play him sparingly and use our other centers more often and save him for the playoffs.

Howard probably isn't coming here, but that'd be interesting I guess.
I'd just target John Henson tbh.

Whelp, I guess the Mavs will just hang onto this for a while. $11.825 million. I would have liked it if they used it on Henson since he's a 3D PF, but they could still make a play for him during the season. Just gotta get rid of a player who probably doesn't fit the team. The first month or so will determine who that player is.

patience is definitely the key to making that last move count. Might not make a move til the TDL if they hold out on doing past training camp. A big is the last need we have to fill and Howard did put up excellent numbers last season so he would be a great signing for a year or 2.
