to stagger or not to stagger that is the question

Just another off-season thread cuz its slow around here.

So if we stagger Ayton and Booker so one of them is always on the floor who should get the minutes next to Rubio? Or should we even stagger them?

Obviously both will improve with Rubio next to them. Ayton will probably get the most out of Rubio while on the court and Booker can create for others as we have seen last year. But do you want to pull your best player on the floor early and rely on Oubre to pick up the slack?

Or heck You can pull Oubre early so he can come back when booker is out so he can get his. Starts but kinda has that 6th man role.

In your poll I would go 3>1>2>4

Oubre can go to bench early because Mikal is as good as Oubre especially with the players in the starting lineup and Oubre can lead the bench with his scoring.

Ayton and Rubio should always play together IMO. Also as you said Booker can create for the bench unit.

They’ll stagger minutes. Booker and Ayton aren’t glove fits offensively which is totally normal. The non-negotiables for Ayton is half court organization and space. Booker ideally with a PnP big + another handler. Good news is Phoenix has the pieces to mix and match until they find best fits.

I suspect split lineups will lean to....

Rubio, Saric, and Ayton
Booker, Kaminsky, and Tyler Johnson (or Oubre)

Bridges fits with any lineup and should receive massive run.

Ayton’s floor raising potential makes his split lineup combos suited for facing benches.

I want to see Bridges at 35 mpg, no matter how he gets them really and Oubre with a lot of run with the bench unit.

Actually last season it was really fun when Bridges and Oubre was on the floor at the same time. So many deflections and steals.

I think there was plenty of synergy between the two last season when they were sharing court time. Both guys brings a ton of length, energy and shooting and where Oubre makes up for a lot of Bridges' lack of dynamism (in his rookie season) and outright athleticism, Bridges makes up for a lot of Oubre's lower IQ plays and defensive rotations. What I do like about Oubre is that even though he's not as discplined defensively (or offensively for that matter) as Bridges, he has shown the ability to play near lock down defensive when he's locked in and focused.

If both guys are able to shoot between 35-40% from the 3, I wouldn't mind seeing both guys start and finish games

I think our best lineup will feature either Rubio or Johnson at PG, and then Booker, Bridges, Oubre, and Ayton. Saric would probably be best staggered with our starters, along with having Oubre/Bridges as our wings playing together.

I definitely think they should have one on the floor at all times. They are the two primary ball handlers so it makes sense....and yeah, Booker needs a lot of 3 pt shooters and defenders around him.

While this makes sense, teams don't really have that kind of rotation where you take out all your starters and put in your whole second unit. You describe it as if they were two completely separated teams.

Booker should have two roles: one as an off-ball sharpshooter when Rubio is on the court, and the other as primary playmaker when he is not (and then mostly surrounded by defenders, indeed). Rubio apparently is at his best as a playmaker only, so that's the role he has to have whenever he is on.
