Was Blake Griffin ever a top-10 player?

Post#1 » by ProcessDoctor » Wed Sep 4, 2019 12:32 am

Blake seems to be somewhat of a polarizing player and is flying under the radar as a true difference-maker in Detroit. Watching his old highlights you can see how phenomenal of an athlete he was (and still is). Was there ever a time he was undoubtedly a top 10 player though?

Dunker yes. Player no.

At his peak he was probably more Jimmy Butler-esque, like top 15ish

Actually, just go watch the 2015 Playoffs. He's the reason the Clips upset the defending champ Spurs. He was the best player in the playoffs in the 1st round.
Brian Geltzeiler: You see Mark Jackson getting a head coaching job as early as next year?

Adrian Wojnarowski: Not if people make calls on him. Not if an organization is doing their homework and knows all the things he brings with him.

He ended up 3rd in the MVP voting, behind only Durant & Lebron... So I think that qualifies him as being well inside the top 10 of that season, and not just 15-ish.

Blake Griffin finished 3rd place in the MVP-race during 2014-15 season.

Something Jimmy Butler has never accomplished in his career lol.

Also, you grossly underrating Blake Griffin if he's just a dunker....

Yea he was

Would've loved to see him play with a C that could space the floor.

Unfortunately he's getting on in age. And still stuck with Drummond.

I would add top-10 in heart&husstle, too. He like Westbrook when he first came in the laegue. The epitome of reckless abandon and desire to win.. too baby it seldom came to fruition

What?

Dude finished 3rd in the 2013-14 MVP voting. He made All-NBA 2nd Team 3 consecutive years. He was 'relegated' to the All-NBA 2nd Team in 2013-14 because the two players ahead of him in the MVP ballot were Lebron and Durant, both forwards.

This. In 13-14 he was an all-star starter, made the all-NBA 2nd team, and finished 3rd in MVP voting. Then in the playoffs the Clippers beat the Warriors but lost in the second round to the Thunder.

Then in 14-15 he beat the Spurs in the first round but lost to the Rockets in the 2nd round. For the 2015 playoffs Blake was 5th in VORP, PER, and total points, 4th in free throws and field goals, 2nd in 2-point field goals, and 3rd in rebounds per game.

Then he got injured, but in his prime he only lost to Kevin Durant, Westbrook and the Thunder, and James Harden and the Rockets. He was a top 10 player for 2 seasons and lost to top 5 players in the playoffs.

He was incredibly athletic and skilled, but his wingspan is shorter than his height and he got injured.

Yeah I think he definitely was. Like a lot of people have said, he for sure was in 2013/14 and he was a beast his first two years in the league as well.

Blake Griffin was always trash. Chris Paul made him look like an all star. All that athleticism and only averaging 7-8 rebounds a game, and it’s not like he was some dominate scorer either. He’s trash. I put him in the same category as Dwight Howard. Overrated bum

....

Well considering I said he was a top 15 guy like Butler, I'm pretty sure I'm giving him credit for being more than just a dunker. Just a dunker would be someone like Gerald Green or stromile swift

He finished 3rd place in mvp voting because Chris Paul made him look like an all star. Chris Paul made him a better life player. when Chris Paul left you never heard Blake griffin named mentioned for mvp voting ever again. Please stop overrating him

The main reason he didn’t get a lot of rebounds is because DJ got so many- taking opportunities away from him

Recency bias mainly because of how stacked the league is star wise but yes this is pretty obvious he was.

He already received MVP votes before Chris Paul was his teammate.

He made All-NBA 3rd Team and the All-Star game with Reggie Jackson as his PG.
