SI's Top 100 NBA Rankings 2020 (Nets Edition)

Post#1 » by MrDollarBills » Tue Sep 10, 2019 2:00 pm

https://www.si.com/nba/top-100-nba-players-2020

DeAndre Jordan is ranked 98

Jarret Allen is ranked 97

Joe Harris is ranked 95

Spencer is ranked 92 (there is no way in HELL Danny Green is better than Spencer. GTFOH)

Caris is ranked 69.

The rest of the list comes out tomorrow, but KD and Kyrie are in the top 30.

So SI thinks that the Nets have 7 of the top 100 players in the league on our roster. My how things have changed.

I love the enthusiasm. I think Joe needs to redeem himself from his playoff performance, but I will say this:

When this team is fully operational, Joe Harris is going to be a monster.

They disrespected Klay Thompson as well so I'm not really mad but Dinwiddie is way better than a lot of guys ahead of him. I think Spence cracks the top 75 tbh, his ability to get to the basket is elite level.

People are really sleeping on this team. Our backcourt imo is a nightmare match up for any team.

I listen to a podcast on these rankings, and they mentioned several times that Kevin Durant will not be on the top 100 list. Klay is on it, and he's going to miss just as much time or more then Kevin in my opinion. I think that people have antiquated ideas of recovery time from an Achilles, and most people don't realize that it happened to Durant's non-dominant leg.

- How does a solid but declining player like Jordan get ranked as high as 98? Wouldn't top-150 or top-200 have been perfectly fair?

- Fro being ranked 97 is purely exciting to me as a fan. I had no idea he was regarded that highly outside of Nets circles. That's just super cool.

- How can the second-best shooter in the league, and a guy who arguably brings a lot more than just that, be ranked as low as 95? It's the defense, I guess? Still, if Joe was indeed a top defender, then suddenly he'd be ranked... what? A top 20 or 30 guy, I take it? Just seems a bit neurotic on SI's part, I dunno.

- Caris' being ranked 69 is pretty interesting. Sort of a safe hedge, I guess? Like-- "this guy easily has the talent and potential to crack the top 40 or 30, but he's also got that injury history. Seems pretty fair, I guess. Not sure.

I feel like people forgot how good Dinwiddie was before his thumb surgery. Still put up 17 and 5 for the year on less than 30 MPG. 58% TS.One of the best iso scorers in the league. Maybe our national TV games are gonna help him get recognition.

Brooklyn Nets

98 - DeAndre Jordan
97 - Jarret Allen
95 - Joe Harris
92 - Spencer Dinwiddie
69 - Caris LeVert
15 - Kyrie Irving

I’m pretty confident Taurean Prince will be on this list next year and of course #7!

OK, I wanted to see how each team shook out in these rankings. I searched at the SI site and elsewhere online, and no one had a team-by-team breakdown. Here is my analysis, in messy raw text format:

My takeaways from looking at these rankings from a team perspective:

-- Charlotte is the only team in the league without a top 100 player. Yeah, they're gonna reek, they've got their eye on the Wiseman prize.
-- Brooklyn is the only team on this list with more than 5 players. Officially, they have 6, and most of them came in the 90's, but it speaks to our high-quality depth. I added Kevin Durant as a 7th, and listed him as 1.5. The author of this ranking admitted that he could be #1 if not for the injury, but he omitted him because most folks assume KD won't play this season.
-- Philly has the highest-ranking trio and starting 5. In fact, the Sixers are 1 of only 6 teams with a quintet on the list, ahead of the Clippers, Jazz, Rockets, Celtics and our own Nets.

Now, my personal ranking quibbles:

-- Kyrie (15) and Jimmy (11) should switch positions. Seriously, Butlermania is getting out of hand. Jimmy is a better defender, but not as elite offensively. Butler has never lifted his teams to the success that Irving has, or played so efficiently and effectively against the very best as KI has. The "locker room cancer" propaganda that Boston launched AFTER Kyrie left has successfully impacted the league's view of Irving. But Jimmy has been waaaaaaaaaaaaaay more detrimental to his team's performance and chemistry, and this was widely publicized while he was still a member of the Wolves. Is it recency bias? Big-market media? IDK, but this bothered me.

-- As you all know, I'm team "Free Kevin Durant" (unranked) this season. He'll miss no fewer than 40 games, probably closer to 50 by the time he re-integrates to the team and our FO take an abundance of caution. But, he WILL play. You look at guys like Paul George (9), who are set to miss at least 30 games and that doesn't seem to have affected their ranking one iota. Victor Oladipo (39) and Klay Thompson (58) are due back around the same time as Kevin, and they did get downgraded, BUT THEY ARE STILL ON THE LIST. Heck, Jusuf Nurkic (78)'s leg. fell. off. his. body., and Portland is rightfully unsure whether he will play this season. Still, he merited a ranking? I've said it before, I think that since Kevin's injury happened at the very end of the season, people assume worse than players who were injured earlier with a more severe prognosis. KD should be #1.

-- I'm no Zach Lavine Stan, but 90 is a bit harsh. Look at Devin Booker (34) and even Bradley Beal (22). They have similar statistical output and efficiency, similar WS/48, similar on/off stats, similar OFF/DEF ratings. What's good for the goose is good for the gander, Zach is a step behind his peers but he belongs in the 60's.

-- Andre Drummond (36) is a joke. He's worked on his FT shooting, so he's no longer a liability in late-game situations. But his stat-stuffing doesn't impact the game the way that several C's behind him do.

-- I think that the rankings appropriately lean forward on the trajectory of young guys like KAT (13), Tatum (35) and even LeVert (69). They haven't consistently performed at their ranking, but you can see that they have it in them. On the flip side, some old heads like Horford (18), Paul (21), Lowry (28), Redick (67) and others are in their mid-30's, barely justified their current rankings based on last season, and are due for further decline. Life comes at you fast, Father Time is undefeated.

Dinwiddie should be ranked higher. He's one of the best north south drivers in the league.
