Denzel Valentine injury update thread

Post#1 » by logical_art » Sat Sep 14, 2019 4:28 am

Please post any updates on his status here. I haven't seen any indication on whether he'll be ready for the season or not. I think he's a pretty useful rotation player, especially for a team that is hoping and praying that Chandler Hutchison is good enough to be the backup at SF.

Low key I feel like the Bulls management might be hoping Hutchison can be a starter to replace Otto Porter's salary.

But, Valentin should be ready for the start of the season.

Hutchison is not starter material and he'll be lucky to be a rotation player in the league. Tony Snell was better and he is still struggling to have a real career in the league.

Thanks for starting this!

I still am looking to see if he has 5-on-5 clearance from doctors?

Do you have a link?

Doubt it.

If anyone has anything credible that’s more recent than the July report that said Valentine wasn’t yet cleared for 5-on-5, I’d love to see it.

This was July and there hasn't been any other updates. If there were serious setbacks there is a high probability it would have been reported.

Give me a break with this nonsense.

I like Porter and hope he stays in Chicago, but Bulls management has often stated that they like to have cap flexibility. My statement was based upon cap implications of keeping Porter long term. Both Porter and Markkanen will be in contract extension territory in the summer of 2021. Both, will be starting at a negotiating point of at least 20 million dollars per year. And, the following summer Carter Jr. and Lavine will need to be extended as well.

then they would have just let jabari and bobby walk, instead of you know, trading for Porter. nobody is saying the bulls are a great management group but ffs.

I'll go ahead and make a sig bet that Mikal is better by RPM this year than Zach.

The days of putting together crappy rosters and tanking for the best lottery odds are gone. We have had cap flexibility for quite some time but with nothing to show for it, making the prospect of having a competitive roster out there even more relevant. If you are not signing big-time free agents and you are not facilitating trades, you might as well allocate your funds to sign second and third tiers players, on short-term contracts, who can at least help you make the playoffs. Having said that, I think it would be wise to try to negotiate a new and fiscally responsible contract with Porter if he continues to be effective, even after resigning Lauri.

Great find!

I doubt we hear any more about his status until Media Day in a couple weeks. Rooting for good news!

It's a "lower body injury" and he's day-to-day...

He looks really thin. Which could help him.

Saw this today:

The last time we saw Valentine healthy, he averaged a modest 10.2 points on 42% shooting and 38.6% from deep for a tanking Bulls team. He added 5.1 rebounds and 3.2 assists, solid counting numbers for the former first-round pick. He's expected to be ready for training camp.

Expectations for this year's role

Whatever he can give the Bulls. The front office addressed the point guard and power forward depth this summer but did very little on the wing. Perhaps it was because they couldn't improve every aspect of the roster, or perhaps they're expecting to get production from Valentine after he missed all of last season. With Chandler Hutchison nursing a hamstring injury, Valentine could have a path to early minutes behind Otto Porter at small forward. More realistic is Valentine seeing minutes at shooting guard, where he'll be taxed less defensively and can focus as a perimeter shooter.

The news about Hutchinson is important and could be critical.

Hamstring injuries can be difficult to recover from, and the biggest impact is on defense.

This opens the door for Valentine to step in early and show if he's recovered.
