Magic Exercising 20-21 Option on Fultz

Post#1 » by GeorgeMarcus » Mon Sep 16, 2019 7:32 pm

This should be extremely encouraging for Magic fans with regard to his development. There was no pressure to extend him now, and it's not like his cap hold is insignificant. Right?

The only Magic here is how this guy will end up bagging $40 in career earnings while barely lifting a finger. Or shoulder rather

Really rooting for the kid and Orlando is the perfect place for him to make his mark. It shouldn't be too hard to take minutes away from Augustin and MCW and the Magic desperately need a capable young point guard. Hope he can put it together!
Go Knicks!

It was almost 7 weeks ahead of deadline so this is really encouraging. Management must know something.

I'm not sure I've ever wanted a guy to success more than Fultz with all the countless garbage hate he's gotten for no reason.

It is telling. His option for next season is 12.3 million so it's not like it's chump change here. They could have created some capspace too...

Now he’s got another pass this year. Expect him to lock it up shortly after training camp. Next year though he’ll have to actually play if he wants that max contract summer ‘21 and decides not to just retire after a profitable NBA career.

It was almost 7 weeks ahead of deadline so this is really encouraging. Management must know something.

they could know everything, and he could look great in practice and working out, and be a top star type offseason, then suits up for a preseason game and airballs all his shots or doesn't take them.

It's an expensive risk, but if you operate as a team over the cap and under the tax, it's just money. Even if he plays bad, they can use the contract in a trade salary filler later. Many teams hang onto salaries for those exact reasons because of being over cap, under tax.

But it takes me back to "but why?". What if he loses an arm in car accident (extreme example).

And Gordon/Isaac comments.

We fans dont expect much and wont get too excited until we see him actually on the court, but this easily could be one of the biggest steals of the decade if all pans out.

Yeah we were in a bad position but that trade was garbage. Easily Brand’s worst as GM.

The bolded. He was killing it in pre-draft workouts, then was a deer in the headlights in games

I am absolutely stunned. Fultz has proven to be nothing short of a giant headache for everyone involved so far in his NBA career. He has accomplished nothing. Why not at least make him go through camp and show progress against actual NBA competition before picking up the option? What's the downside?

Even if Hammond has been attending private workouts over the summer where Fultz has looked great, it still doesn't make sense. Fultz's agent deserves a raise. He should get to keep half of the 12M.

Beyond the stupidity from the Magic's perspective, I don't see how it helps Fultz's development to once again have something handed to him without having to earn it.

Not expecting much and meanwhile mentioning steal of the decade? ;-)
