Tony Snell trade value

Post#1 » by OptionZero » Sun Dec 29, 2019 8:52 pm

Hey guys

GSW fan here. I come in peace.

GSW has a $17M trade exception in the offseason (and about 24 hours to use it in July, based on some hard cap/league year timing stuff). They don't have a second but will have probably a top 10, top 5 1st round pick.

Is DET likely to deal Snell in the summer, and whats his value to the team? He seems like a fine rotation wing but only has a year left. If Drummond gets paid, i believe DET is in the tax.

Would DET have any interest in a straight dump of Snell into the TPE?

Don't the Warriors have tax issues? And that's why they haven't used the TPE yet?

I'd rather keep Snell for a year than to salary dump him unless I know there's someone for sure coming in the summer as a free agent. It's not a good deal because Snell is a good shooter and that's why he'll stay in the NBA. GSW would have to give a young player back at least a second round pick.

Take him please. He's awful and will be paid like 4x what he is worth next season.

Snell value now is 0. The draft night his value will be higher as an expiring contract. We have to wait.

Exactly this. He is a good sized expiring soon and is a capable role player. That could actually be a pretty valuable piece. Right now his value neutral if not slightly negative.

If we actually commit to a rebuild, we'll probably use him as an expiring to get some future asset. Obviously he won't bring back much, but we aren't looking to salary dump him at this point.

GSW is hardcapped and cannot add any salary ( they might have a buck or two in breathing room thats it) during this league year

However, the TPE was not created until a day or so into FA and lasts one year. Thats why they have about 24 hours during which the hardcap is lifted and the TPE still exists

Going forward without the hardcap, they'll certainly be in the luxury tax but they are returning to win-now mode and i expect Lacob to eat any tax payments going forward

We don't need Snell to be awesome. He just needs to be a competent defender and hit open 3's

We dont have a second this year year but we might get one for Burks or GR3 at the deadline and can probably flip that your way

I agree Snell doesn't hold positive value due to his expensive contract. I think he might be neutral value as he is a decent role player.

We got a late first in the 2019 draft to absorb him. I'd dump him for nothing/expiring.
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

Pick and youth. I would trade anyone except for the rook, and Kennard.

I loathe Snell. Need a big shot? He'll miss it for sure.
