Blue Jays trade for Daniel Vogelbach

Post#1 » by Kris_Banks » Tue Aug 25, 2020 8:37 am

The Toronto Blue Jays have traded with the Seattle Mariners for 1B/DH Daniel Vogelbach. The Blue Jays will be sending cash considerations to Seattle. Vogelbach was an All star last year hitting 30 home runs but has struggled this season. I think this is a great move for the Jays and proves we're serious about getting back into the playoffs. Discuss.

As per RealGM wiretap https://baseball.realgm.com/wiretap/52022/Mariners-Trade-Daniel-Vogelbach-To-Blue-Jays

Daniel Vogelbach stats https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/v/vogelda01.shtml
It's racist to call someone a "settler".

Seems like the typical Shatkins dollar store player. I figured they would look for an upgrade over Panik/Drury, not Tellez/Guerrero.

His numbers are abysmal.

Low hanging fruit. Basically a pinch-hitter/injury insurance unless Tellez is getting traded.

Why would they want to trade Tellez when he's cheap and controllable? And I don't think any team is going to give us anything of value for him.. he seems more valuable to us than any other team.

Yeah, I really don't get it. Why would they want to take up a bench spot for a situational pinch-hitter. They already have to bench Tellez when a position player needs to DH.

Is it crazy to think that they may trade Vlad for a frontline starter?

Teams have 25 players on their roster and probably play closer to 40-45 different players over the course of a normal season. And especially in baseball, unproductive players for one team turn into productive players for another quite often. Gleyber Torres has abysmal numbers too didn’t he?

So why every time management makes a move does somebody chime in with a post like this just because they didn’t pick up a star, other than they’re looking for any opportunity to rip management? Every roster is made up of primarily ‘dollar store players’.

They're not trading Vlad, especially to accommodate a guy the picked up for cash.

I'm pretty sure it's fairly simple. Despite the duplication to Tellez, Vogelbach is just someone with interesting underlying numbers that is worth taking a flier on. He's really a threat to Tellez, as he's basically him but with plate discipline. Unless Tellez shows something substantial he's probably doomed to lose his spot to Vogelbach.

Because he's bad at hitting, fielding, running, isn't versatile and we're 3 deep at 1B on the current roster. Depth is fine, I just don't see the value in devoting a roster spot to this particular player.

At a certain point it is going to be hard to carry a bunch of guys that can only play 1b on the roster. We have 3 atm, which is less than ideal. Vogelbach can definitely turn it around and rake but him being on the roster as opposed to a guy that can run or add defensive versatility makes Charlie Montoyo's job a bit harder.

At a certain point with the runner at second base rule in extras. You can argue that a guy that can't hit but is a speedster and can play an OF spot would be more valuable as a pinch runner/late game defensive replacement. Terrence Gore is a perfect example of this.

Thought this was a dumb acquisition at the time. Now I wish we would have kept him for more than 1 week.
