This could be big if something comes out of it but I doubt the league would allow it. IIRC Pistons are still paying Josh Smith.

If granted, Lakers get to wipe away Dengs 5 mil stretch cap hit. Giving the team 5 mil more cap space to work with.

CHA applied for the same exemption for Mozgov last year after stretching him, and was granted. I just don’t see why the NBA would deny this if Deng is washed up and unable to get on a team. Lakers getting 5 mil more cap space means more money to be spent on active players. Win win for everyone except Laker haters.

Random comment but I’m happy we have Jeannie Buss as our owner. Keep that championship tradition alive.

This Deng thing is the last thing we have as a reminder of the Jim Buss era and I can’t wait until it’s behind us in one form or another.
11 titles won in LA in the modern era, while y’all living on “success” from 2 generations ago

THANK YOU ROB! I've always hated Mitch for this. Wow I thought there was no way to get that ridiculous contract off the books. Please get off our books Dung!

Don't think it'll happen since Deng played after. He didn't play 25 games, but he did play.

I heard the league approved it.

Edit: According to the source, a Woj co-worker posted something somewhere. Not sure if its legitimate, haven’t seen it.

Mitch was under Jim’s reign, had no way of stopping him from sabotaging us. I loved Mitch as a GM, never blamed him for any fires that Jimmy set. Still don’t. But I can see how Jeannie would never forgive Mitch for going along with it, executing it.

It sure would be nice to get that salary off the books.

I posted this on the GB thread and I didn't see it mentioned here but I might as well again

Josh Smith played 113 games for another 3 separate franchises afterwards as opposed to Deng not reaching the arbitrary 25 games number

It sure would be nice to get that salary off the books.

Mitch the GM.

Let Horace walk over paying him 3mil he asked for and let Lue walk too over 2mil. He instead replaced them with Hunter, Richmond, and Walker all on vet mins where back then the league paid half their salaries. Lakers struggled the 02 playoffs because Fisher and Horry had no replacements.

Mitch renounced the rights to George only to turn around and give him the full mle in the summer of the 02-03 season where Chauncey Billups was free agent and took mle money. That team broke down and Horry had no legs because he still never replaced Horace. And people make fun of Fisher for Troy Hudson because he never replaced Lue or Harper, while ignoring Fisher averaged 16 vs Minnesota himself without a backup. Fox got hurt and we had to extend George minutes and he got hurt. We wasted what you can argue was Kobe’s athletic peak that year as he was on a tear.

He signed Malone and Payton that summer. He refused to pay Horry 2 mil to return to the team as Horry has said before to backup Malone. Instead he offered Horace the minimum to come out retirement and relied on Slava. Then he drafted Cook with much more talent on the board. He brought in Bryon Russell who Phil didn’t want to replace Shaw. Fast forward to Malone getting hurt or as he says misdiagnosed which is possible in retrospect (see steve Blake injury or Kobe being allowed to practice on a fractured knee they missed) and us having no one to check Sheed. Horry would have been really nice then.

He let Fisher walk for mle money basically. He traded Payton away and got Chucky Atkins back because he never talked to Payton or Fox about dealing them which would be a common theme with him later on (see Odom and Fisher) which changed the deal when one retired and the other failed to report in a timely fashion. He gave Vlade Divac the full mle. He paid Slava to return over market value as well for two years. He thus wasted a year of time and made a horrible roster which was capped by coaching changes and Rudy T being a drunk sent to rehab.

He signed Aaron mckie to the full mle and he never did a damn thing. He traded Caron for Kwame again not telling anyone so Caron and Kobe found out by the tv in the gym. He would also sign smush to make him a starting pg and Laron Profit, and rely on Sasha to be the three guards with Kobe. Kobe carried trash to over 500 along with Lamar and Luke. Brian Grant wasn’t playable and got cut too.

Then he signed Shammond Williams from overseas. He let George walk to replace him with Mo Evans. He paid I snowboard Vlad Rad at free agency start the full length and money mle vs no bidders (Deng and Mozgov). He paid Cook an 11mil extension with no bidders or market. He drafted Farmar. Fails to void Rads constract too for snowboarding.

Then he would pay like the full mle like money and most years possible with bird rights fresh off ankle surgery with no bidders. Then he pays Fisher the money he asked for 3 years before despite being older and coming off two knee surgeries. Kobe is pissed you wasted his prime and Jerry Buss has to come in and save the day and talk to him. He was offered pau, didn’t seek him out, as he wanted Mike Miller by his own admission and admits he would’ve hesitated dealing for Pau had Bynum not been hurt. He offloaded Cook and Mo, his own bad deals for Ariza who was almost out the league but Kobe and Phil make him into something.

He does Rad his bad deal and turns him into Adam Morrison which is who he went after and Brown is the throw in but Phil made him useful. Replaced Turiaf and Mihm with Mbenga and Powell. Paid Sasha like so many before him with no bidder.

Lost Ariza but got Artest back. Signed Shannon back.

Turned Sasha into Joe Smith. Renounced Farmar and got Steve Blake who never did anything as a laker besides step on a spike strip. Signed Barnes. Drafted character who hit a pregnant chick. Signed Eubanks because if you squint he could pass for Trevor from a distance. Got Ratcliff who was done to replace Powell and Mbenga. Oh yeah he almost lost Fisher and Odom both to the point Jerry Buss went and negotiated their contracts himself without him or Jim to return. Pink slipped the whole staff of Phil Jackson too before game 1 vs Dallas

The CP3 debacle. Traded Fisher without a phone call or any respect so fish finds out on tv. Traded Odom without any respect so he finds out on the radio. Then turned Odom into a waste tpe. But hey he got the corpse of Kapuno and Murphy in as well as Josh McRoberts under Mike Brown. Got Sessions in for all of three months for him to leave. Got Jordan Hill for Fisher who he would later pay to be a starter but was never actually good outside per 36 numbers.

Nash, Dwight, Dantoni, run Kobe into the ground, miss out on Phil **** Jackson

Alienate Pau. Lose Dwight. Wes Johnson, Xavier Henry, Farmar

Lin and Boozer. Hire Scott. Pau walks. Get told you can’t talk basketball by both Lamarcus Aldridge and Carmelo Anthony as you and Jim both can’t answer basketball questions. Pay Nick Young.

Hibbert, Lou, and Bass. But at least Kobe still sold tickets for you.

Deng and Mozgov

Mitch wasn’t a great GM at all. Jerry west set the table for Kobe and Shaq. He depleted that team to nothing was left. When Kobe got fed up Jerry Buss saved the day. When Lamar and Fisher almost left dealing with him Buss came in and closed the deal without him or Jim, and he would later trade them both as rudely and coldly as possible. He was carried by Phil and Kobe, not by his own competence

Got it, thanks

I understand there's a certain number of games that must've been played by the player and judging from the posts here, there's a chance

Man, what a CV you put together for Mitch!

Sure, if you run a franchise for a decade you will make mistakes. He made many. He also made many incredibly good moves. Some of which netted us two championships without Logo.

Here’s a somewhat more nuanced take on Mitch’s impact: https://bleacherreport.com/articles/1301213-what-every-gm-should-learn-from-lakers-front-office-maestro-mitch-kupchak
