Mock Draft 2021 - NOTES

Post#1 » by MartinsIzAfraud » Wed Jul 21, 2021 3:33 pm

# In our first look since the Draft order was set on Lottery night, one thing is clear: Cade Cunningham is the consensus No. 1 pick, showing up first in all 12 mocks that we scanned. He leads what appears to be a clear top six, followed by Evan Mobley, Jalen Suggs, Jalen Green, Jonathan Kuminga and Scottie Barnes.

# The No. 2 spot is a pretty even split between Mobley and Green, with Mobley showing up in seven of the 12 and Green showing up four times. One lone mock (Gary Parrish of CBS Sports) sees the Rockets taking a chance on Gonzaga’s Suggs.
Suggs seems like he’s a Top 4 lock as the other 11 mock drafts see him going to the Raptors at No. 4. That’s the closest thing we have to a consensus outside of Cunningham at No. 1.

# From there, projections begin to vary widely, with only Davion Mitchell, whom six mocks slot at No. 7 to the Warriors, and Keon Johnson — four at No. 9 — appearing more than four times at a common selection.

# The player making the biggest rise since the Lottery is James Bouknight, a shooting guard out of UConn. According to ESPN’s Jonathan Givony, Bouknight had an “impressive” pro day and is looking like “one of the best shooters in the draft.” Bouknight now appears as high as seventh to Golden State (four times) or three times to the Magic at No. 8. Expect his stock to continue to rise as more mock drafts update leading up to Draft night.

# Another player to keep an eye on is Kai Jones, who now appears in the lottery in four different mocks after being on the outside in our last look. Two mocks (Yahoo and Bleacher Report) see the Kings taking the big man out of Texas at No. 9, while Basketball News has him 11th to Charlotte and ESPN sees the Warriors taking him at No. 14.

# On the international front, it appears Turkey’s Alperen Sengun and Australia’s Giddey are potential lottery locks, with several mocks tabbing them for the Spurs and Pacers, respectively. The 18-year-olds are both rangy for their position, and could come in sharp after competing professionally for several seasons.

# Eight players appear in the lottery in all 12 mocks we survey: Cunningham, Green, Mobley, Suggs, Barnes, Kuminga, Mitchell and Giddey.

Chances are Tier 4 above has one guy who's career will rival Cade.

based off positions and # of solid players in that Tier I would agree. Think there's more chance that a few of those players have better careers than Barnes & Kuminga

I agree as well. Every year, there are consensus top-10 guys that are complete busts. While I don't think this draft is a loaded as most think, there will definitely be a few decade long career starters out of that tier 4 group.

Vecenie update today

Magic at 5

I believe the Magic are much more likely, at this point, to select Barnes than Jonathan Kuminga, the other player typically associated with this pick. One other note: don’t be surprised if Orlando tries to move up on draft night, as the team is thought to like Jalen Suggs.

Magic at 8 -> Options include Bouknight, Moody, Wagner & Sengun. Magic are one of few teams who worked out Sengun inside the top 10 he could be a trade back option if they don't like what they have at 8.

I believe Bouknight is a threat at 6 (OKC). The reason why he wouldn't go in the top 6 is if the teams in the top 6 view (Cade, Green,Mobley, Suggs, Kuminga and Barnes) as the top 6 picks. I was scared of Bouknight going 6 to OKC, but perhaps the only team we have to be scared of is Golden State at 7. I be upset if we passed on Bouknight at 8 if he was available at 8, assuming Kuminga and barnes are already drafted.

So 2 mock draft have Moses Moody at 11th pick? Where's the other 10 mock drafts? I'm torn between Bouknight and Moody at 8, it makes it easy if Bouknight goes #7. If we get bouknight at 8, i'm sure Moody will still go in the top 10 either 9th or 10th.

I would agree that OKC could easily take Bouk at 6 then GS would almost certainly take Moody at 7 and we'd be sitting at 8 pissing our pants. This all boils down to Kuminga. He makes 0 sense for GS and unless that pick gets traded it'll come down to who OKC likes more.

I have a weird feeling Toronto takes Barnes at 4 and Suggs falls to Orlando at 5.

Barnes and OG would be an incredible pairing. I am not saying it would work, it just seems like it would be something out of Space Jam.

I am not sure if Toronto takes Barnes, Suggs seems like a perfect replacement for Lowry, Suggs and VanVleet back court seems pretty solid, I could see Cleveland being interested in Barnes, too, but at the end of the day i think the top 4 is chalk, and we end up with Barnes. I prefer Suggs, but Suggs or Barnes and I am pretty happy, anybody else and I am going to have to figure out what it is that I am missing.

We didn't even work out Suggs did we?

Woj also said we need offensive skill so with comments of the 3 draft/nba Intel guys, safe bet to assume we go offense with number 8.

If this was a trade, we can assume the other team will leak. However, this is an internal decision(draft) and you know how our org works. So those loud rumblings probably are just the extra spicy sauce on their burritos.
