Anything you would change about this Top 5 at each position since 1980

Post#1 » by mdonnelly1989 » Fri Nov 5, 2021 1:29 am

Few notes: Harden has played Combo guard at PG and SG, so I put him at PG here. Also Duncan has also played combo 4 and 5 so I put him at Center here.

Also these are not in order.

PG:

Curry
Magic
CP3
Harden
Stockton

SG:

MJ
Kobe
Wade
T-Mac
Drexler

SF:

Lebron
Bird
KD
Pippen
Kawhi

PF:

KG
Dirk
Barkley
Malone
Giannis

C:

Hakeem
Shaq
Duncan
Robinson
Ewing

Curry doesn't belong on top of Magic
Harden does not belong in any top pg all time list.
Duncan belongs in the PF section

I’d move Harden to SG in place of McGrady and add Isiah to the PG list

I’d only keep Duncan in the C list because I can’t decide which PF to remove

I’d also want Wilkins in the SF list at the expense of either Pippen or Leonard.

One benefited greatly from playing alongside Jordan, had you swapped Nique & Pippen in 86 no one would be arguing Pippen is better other than on defense

The other has missed too much time, despite being the best player on a championship team

Personally I think Gary Payton is a better overall player than John Stockton. I don't know if I would put Harden over either one of them.

No Pippen. Try Dom Wilkins, Dr. J, or James Worthy. Agree w/ OP about Duncan as PF.

I also think Iverson should be somewhere in this list but not sure who I would have him over.

1980 MVP...

But honestly I hate positions so much. Chuck played some listed as a small forward. Lebron has been a 1, 3 and 4 (and heck he's even been listed as a shooting guard). KG has been 3-5. It's so much better to come up with broader roles. I mean really Dray is the point on the warriors but not a guard. Curry is a scoring guard, who brings the ball up but doesn't generally run the offense. Pippen ran point for the bulls, why's he a small forward?

Paul Gasol or Dwight Howard probably deserves a nod ahead of Patrick Ewing, imo.

I'd take Steve Nash and Isiah Thomas over James Harden as a PG.

Adding Kareem just made things complicated. And I wanted to make sure someone like Patrick Ewing got included who imo is severely underrated on this board.

I get what you mean about positions. Especially today it seems is more positionless basketball. Imagine if people in 1985 suddenly seen Nikola Jokic play today in the future of 2021. They wouldn't believe their eyes and the birth of an entirely new position would be created.

As for the sake of this, not sure any other way to do this. I want to create 5 Teams with the top 5 players on them. I want to create as close of a team between the 5 as possible.

Tough question. They really show the difference in eras. I guess Nash because he was a 2x MVP and he was lethal in pick-and-roll. Isiah is more highly regarded on most all-time lists. IT was a much better defensive player.

I mean they saw Walton, he's a different animal to some degree but the change was coming. There were some very good jump shooting bigs, heck Lambier was a great floor spacer by around 85 and was a "big man".

Take 1-3 and take 3 and your bottom two teams and take 2. Move Larry to the "big man" team. I think you're 90% there. But then you can add nash and drop drexler and you might have a few other adjustments. You could group small guards and limit to 5 and wings to 10 as well.

yeah, I'd have Magic 1st, Bird 1st, Duncan 1st (at PF where he played mostly) and Kareem at C. You DO realize Kareem won 5 rings in the 1980s and a Finals MVP in 1985 right?! His numbers weren't as high but he sacrificed quite a bit with Magic, Worthy, Cooper and Scott on those teams. There wasn't a better center in the 80s than Kareem.

Harden down to SG in place of McGrady. Put Nash in for the opening PG spot. Then Jokic over Ewing at the 5.
