Players with biggest drop in FTA this year in %.

Post#1 » by leolozon » Sat Nov 13, 2021 11:02 pm

I've looked at 28 players. I've also looked at post all-star last year for some of them, but gave up. Harden was more himself post all-star. Doncic started going less to the rim. Embiid started getting less call. For these guys, the post AS drop can be more telling.

Before today's games, the FTA had gone down 9.2%. Butler, Morant, DeRozan, CP3 and Lavine are shooting more FTs this year. Giannis, Durant, Jokic and PG have gone down by less than the average.

Of course the sample size is small.

Lillard -52.80% (post AS -50.80%)
Ingram -48.10%
B. Beal -45.50% (post AS -38.10%)
Sexton - 45.30%
Mitchell -40.00%
T.Young -35.60% (post AS -25.50%)
K.Towns -33.90%
Lebron -33.30%
Booker -30.50%
Harden -24.70% (post AS -40.00%)
Westbr. -23.40%
J. Grant -23.40%
D. Fox -22.20% (post AS -30.40%)
Lamelo -21.90%
S. Curry -20.60% (post AS -29.30%)
Embiid - 19.60% (post AS -9.70%)
Doncic -18.30% (post AS -0%)
Randle -11.70%
Tatum -9.40%

the commas are decimals for people who arent from wherever OP is from. This is pure comedy. a lot ofthese guys are seeing signifigant fg% decreases because players arent afraid to guard them now either.

:D The dot didn't work in my Excel. I thought it wasn't worth to manually change them, but as the first comment is about it, I did change them.

This is great news. A lot of floppers and guys who hunt for the whistle. Now call moving screens next. Then we will see lockdown man defense return,

Hot Take: Lillard is sandbagging to get traded. Goes from absolute stone cold assassin for 10+ years to junk in a week? Unless he's an absolute fraud which isn't true what is going on. NOBODY falls off that hard after 10+ all star seasons, not even with crippling injuries. NOBODY. That plus the Neil Olshey news id bet Lillard is gone by the end of the year

I know it's done for dramatic effect but you really gotta post the actual free throw attempted before/after number. 20-30% less doesn't mean much if the player was taking a low volume in the first place. Would only amount to one less trip to the stripes per game.

I get it, but a guy shooting 10 FTs going down by 1 FTA isn't the same as guy shooting 4 FTs per game going down by 1 FTA, so I still think % is more fair. Of course the sample is small, the % would be more relevant at the end of the year, it's still not with 11 games.

That's exactly why you post both.

FTA have been consistently dropping for the past 10 years. Low FTs per game are the norm for today’s NBA.

Here is the trajectory of the past 3 seasons.

2020: 23.1 FTA per game
2021: 21.8 FTA per game
2022: 19.8 FTA per game

The best part is that list is basically all the most egregious foul baiters minus Chris Paul.
