The curious case of Kyle and Demar's contracts.

Post#1 » by biebstothelotto » Mon Nov 22, 2021 10:26 pm

At a glance Kyle Lowry, and Demar Derozan, two Raptors legends, have EXACTLY the same contract. However, upon close examination, Kyle the Raptor GOAT is making 3 dollars more over the course of three years. Is he worth the extra money or would you take Demar at a discount?

Kyle Lowry
Team 2021-22 2022-23 2023-24
Miami Heat $26,984,128 $28,333,334 $29,682,540

Demar Derozan
Team 2021-22 2022-23 2023-24
Chicago Bulls $26,984,127 $28,333,333 $29,682,540

Wow, that is really strange. You have to wonder if Kyle's contract was a negotiating point.

Funnily enough, both guys provide exactly what their current teams need from each of them. However, if we're talking just from a pure contract standpoint, I'd definitely take Kyle for those 3 extra dollars.

Arison can make his coffee at home for a day or two. Bootstraps and all that.

It probably goes by a percentage of the cap which is why you have all those random numbers like $26,984,127 instead of a nice round number like $26,900,000.

Derozan is playing at an elite level right now so that contract is looking like a bargain.

Lowry is Lowry. He's a bit slower, but brings a lot of intangibles to his team. He's almost 36 so the question is when does he start declining significantly. Can he keep it up like CP3 or does he turn to a Parker, Billups, Kidd etc. towards the end of their careers.

Very interesting that there is a difference between 2 contracts. Discuss.

Kyle doesn't fill the stat sheet but brings a lot of intangibles to Miami and their success. Leadership, getting guys in their place, and playing defense.

On paper, Demar looks way more valuable but both are equally impactful in their roles. Would love to see a MIA/CHI series..

DeMar is shooting 49% from field, 36% on 3's with 2.5 attempts and 90% at the line on 8 attempts. He is definitely in a different gear right now. We've seen him go off like this before so will be interesting to see if it is a hot stretch or if he can sustain. If he can, he has more value than Lowry for the contract (taking age into consideration and the likely decline of Kyle in the next 3 years).

So how do you come up with a $3 difference there?

Demar is undisputed MVP currently and cementing his legacy ahead of that other Chicago Bulls guy with a statue
2019 Eastern Conference All Stars

Derozan
Lowry
Ibaka
Valanciunas
Van Vleet
Delon Wright
Lebron
Embiid

There are only 2 teams in the league that rank in the top 6 in offensive and defensive efficiency: the Golden State Warriors and the Toronto Raptors.

You gotta factor in the low income tax in Miami

Who signed their contract second? Might be an inside joke between them.

Demar played better for the Bulls than Steph. It's a fact.

Curry is great but defense has to count for something and Demar plays both ends of the floor

Exactly. Steph did nothing in our last game, whereas DeMar killed us a few weeks ago. Nurse's usual strategy is to deny the other team's superstar the ball, but DeMar was just too much superstar for us.
