Mitch Richmond, sure. There are a lot of retired players who are far from millionaires though.

Period.

Now, we all know many NBAers are financial idiots and blow all their money on strippers and stupid cars before they have even retired, but it should be noted that according to bballref Mitch Richmond made $52 million over his career. And this is a guy who needs free health care?

Jeez, I mean, Richmond couldn't possibly be talking about all those former players from 60s, 70s and 80s or even 90s that didn't make anywhere near the crazy NBA money that players are making nowadays.

Have some compassion for **** sake and show some respect for players and people that go out of their way to help others less fortunate than them.

If I remember right this became a big push after Shaq paid for George Mikan's funeral after it come out that he died penniless. Part of the cba in 2006 or 7 increased the monthly payouts and got retired players free health care. The players especially the union leaders including Derick Fisher at the time deserve a lot of praise for making the owners and the union do something that should have been done decades ago.

It sounds like these retired players did not hire the right people to manage their their finance.

When you read stories about players [and there are plenty of them] who played a few years before the big money and are destitute because of medical bills [just like when it happens to "real people"] you have to feel good about news like this.

Unless you're a cynical POS of course.

Donald Trump and Warren Buffett hardly "need" tax-breaks, but if it's there on offer why not use it? :dontknow:

I'm curious, what happens to Canadian NBA players, can they opt-in for additional compensation instead of health care since they already have Single Payer Universal Healthcare in Canada?

Hey, maybe we should join the rest of the Western world and vote that in or something.

Or we'll just keep it reserved to people who do a "service" like being born 7 feet and playing in the NBA or having to risk their lives for x number of years in the military.

American politicians have a weird hate towards free healthcare. It has always baffled me why they don't do it.

Mitch Richmond trying to praise the Players Association.

NBA Fans - trying to not just talk about LeBro and failing.

Because we already have way too many bloated social programs and the US government sucks at administering anything.

Don't know why retired NBA players are considered some kind of charity case. If you're a retired 40 year old you shouldn't need assistance with anything. Go get another job if you can't get afford healthcare like the rest of the country.

Because players weren't always getting $20/30/40 million a year? Just an example, and definitely not the worst one: Larry Bird earned $24million over a 13 season career. Nikola Vukevic is earning Bird's CAREER earnings THIS year... Bill Russell apparently topped out at around $100000 per season...

It's only fun when Lebron does something negative.

We don't care that he's fighting for previous players Healthcare, opening schools, donating to hospitals, and gives funds to under privileged kids. That's not fun because LeBrOn FoRmS sUpErTeAmS !!!11
