39/15/3/2 good lord.
With this performance, the Pelicans big man joins Stephen Curry as the only players this season to record at least 35 points, 10 rebounds and knock down seven 3-pointers.

As good as the Raptors player development has been, I think we dropped the ball with JV. He cam into the league as a skinny kid, and we dirty bulked him into a lumbering centre - the opposite of where the league was moving at the C position. Although that may be beer-chugging JV's fault rather than the Raptors development staff, who knows.

I haven't watched JV in a while, but in these brief highlights he looks more agile, in better shape, and much more decisive. I'm happy for him. He's putting together a heck of a season, and maybe he'll play his way out of NO onto a contender. It makes little sense for NO to keep a 29-year-old centre on a rebuilding roster, and JV's deal is excellent value - they could probably get a good haul back for him.

As for the JV vs Gasol debate, there's no doubt in my mind that Gasol was essential in that Championship win. Without him, we don't get past the Sixers. JV is a good player, but still doesn't can't hold a candle to what Gasol did for us that year.
Nick Nurse recounting his first meeting with Kawhi:
“We could have gone forever. (Raptors management) kept knocking on the door and I was like, ‘A couple more minutes.’ Because we were really into it."

I think he decided to bulk after Pekovic wrecked him.

Agreed, but I'm wondering if we had JV instead of Gasol in 2020, could we have won a championship then?

I actually tried a Pascal for JV + Satoransky + NAW trade this morning. It worked, increased the Raps room under the tax AND increased our wins by 13 (according to Hollinger/PER).

JV was great for us, but the Gasol trade will always be worth it, even if we only got 1.5 solid years out of him.

Love JV. Though on D I've always find the way he defends and back peddles, and the way how he's very deliberate in making sure he doesn't get called for defensive 3 seconds - looks awkward - or it may be just the way both NO and Memphis uses him on defence. I don't think he looked like that when he played for the Raps.

He just never got the chance to play in the playoffs w Kawhi

Yep.. until Kawhi arrived both Kyle and dd sucked and vanished come playoffs... fan base here has very short memories...

Gasol was way overrated also and jv would have been solid for this team going forward.. he is everything this team lacks....

2021 and people still run with that false derozan/Lowry narrative. Nba fans here are remedial y’all don’t analyze games you’d rather go for hot takes.

Good for JV, he always brought it in the playoffs even if he got played off the court on the defense end. That said, he wasn't our most disappointing player during that era (playoff DeRozan, by far), and he got us Gasol who was the last piece of our championship puzzle... When he left I wanted the best for him, no animosity at all.

But seriously, what are some of you watching to think Gasol wasn't a key factor in our championship run? Like, man. Some of you guys watch every single game and still don't have a clue.

How does this thread become about everything but JV. I don’t understand how Gasol or derozan are even mentioned why not just analyze his season or this specific game. Basketball coverage is awful.

While JV can shoot 7/7 from deep and score 29 points in a half THIS YEAR.

So what? We're not competing for a championship "THIS YEAR". Does that mean JV can play defense in space or PnR? Our defense has cratered since we lost Gasol/Ibaka, legit best front court in history. JV ain't it if you want to win a Championship, he's easily exposed.

and how did Gasol/Ibaka's defense help us against the celtics in the 2nd round after Kawhi left?

Uhhh we went to 7 and had a 103DRTG when Gasol played... so like... really well?
What an absolute failure and disaster this franchise is, ran by one of the most incompetent front offices in the league.

I have been very anti trade Siakam, but getting NAW back would be nice and Satoransky would help spell FVV a lot I think.

He finally evolved into his final form by not pump-faking 7 times before each 3!
