[Marc Stein] The Rockets would be willing to trade Wall for Westbrook if the Lakers offered their 2027 first round pick

https://marcstein.substack.com/p/the-plausibility-of-trading-russell

"I have been advised that I should amend my previous characterization of the Lakers' finding a Westbrook trade from outright impossible to extremely unlikely. There is at least one team out there that would take him, league sources say, if the conditions are right. That team, surprisingly, is the Houston Rockets.

I, like many around the league, was previously under the impression that the Rockets would have less than zero interest in a Westbrook reunion after Houston traded Westbrook to Washington for John Wall in December 2020 shortly before the start of last season.

I've since learned that the Rockets - while indeed holding no interest in having Westbrook play for them again - actually would be amenable to another Westbrook-for-Wall swap if the Lakers incentivized the trade with sufficient draft compensation.

Sources say that the Lakers could convince Houston to take Westbrook back for Wall if they attached their 2027 first round draft pick to the deal. The Lakers could naturally try to offer multiple second round picks instead, but L.A's 2027 first- rounder is the piece rival teams naturally covet.

Reason being: That 2027 first is clearly the most valuable trade asset that the Lakers currently possess. The Lakers have tried, with no luck yet, to package that pick with Talen Horton-Tucker and Kendrick Nunn in an attempt to acquire Jerami Grant from Detroit."

I'd do it if it were for a few seconds rather than a first. Wall can't be this bad surely.

Imagine trading a 1st round pick 5 years from now to dump one of the worst stylistic fits in NBA history.

I can’t think of a single situation around the league where Westbrook could fit in.

That would probably be a killer for the Lakers considering Lebron might be done by then & Davis can’t play anything near a full season. Plus Davis looks like he could give af anymore.

That's even dumber than trading KCP, Kuz, Harrell, and draft compensation for Westbrook.

Problem is the Lakers will always rebound with the next superstar signing there. It's infuriatingly predictable.

It obviously makes no sense for the Lakers to do that but perhaps if they made it Westbrook, THT. Nunn for Wall and Gordon including the 1st would not sting as much.
When will we just change the name of 25 of the 30 teams to the Washington Generals?

Please advise….

My god this is the best thing ever....Walls contract so bad we would trade him and picks for Westbrook—— Westbrook so bad we would trade him for Wall and picks 80 plus mil a year for these guys.

It would be great if some how Simmons they could team up with Simmons - Like all 3 to Orlando or Detroit who ever is their best player...and picks

We deserve a Wall Westbrook and Simmons team

Not sure I can come up with a difference between Wall and Westbrook at this point. Defense maybe?

Lakers should try to trade Westbrook+Reaves+2027 1st to the Knicks for Kemba/Fournier/Noel/Gibson. That deal is starting to make some sense for both teams.

Intensity and leadership

Wall don’t care bruh...

I love Wall but his intensity and attention to detail left Washington way before they traded him

This would make the Lakers immensely better. It's a joke how Wall is being treated by the Rockets, the guy can actually still play. Sure, it's not at a 44M level but still pretty damn good.

This lineup gets the Lakers back on the championship track pretty quickly. I'm sure they can find a buyout candidate to replace Ariza in the starting lineup.

Wall /Lebron
Gordon/ Bradley
Ariza/ Reaves
Lebron/ Melo
AD/ Dwight

I like this trade.

The Lakers rid themselves of Westbrook who hurts them more than helps them and if Wall is terrible he is fine with riding the bench. Gordon can still contribute.

Houston gets some decent young players, a 1st round pick and Westbrook to lead the tank.

The rare horrible trade for both teams. It’s obvious the Rockets are doing this to buy out Westbrook but they want to get a pick out of it.

Lakers in no way in hell should make this trade. It’s idiotic. The previous Westbrook trade was bad, but you could see a slimmer of upside. This has zero and they lose a pick.
