Welp, likely means there goes the backup PG everyone penciled into next year's lineup.

This sucks. I really liked Sato. Thought he was a winning player. I would have been fine with him as a stop gap starting PG for a year while we develop a young prospect for the long term. Now we are going to have to go pay a guy like Ricky Rubio, unless we make a significant trade for a PG.

Yeah I bet he realizes he’s a veteran minimum guy in the NBA and he can make double that in Europe.
So Wizards indeed.
I’d sign Delon Wright at this point.

I'd pay him the Biannual Exception: about $3.9M IIRC.

I like how Sato played down the stretch. Had hoped he’d stay on as a backup PG. But I don’t blame the Zards for not being willing to match the salary that he’s probably being offered overseas. I’d rather spend the money on a Rubio or Delon Wright.

It's not just salary but lifestyle, if the numbers are even close. Granted the NBA minimum is about equal to the max in the ACB. But they play 34 games a year. In Spain. Where Sato has been a star and figures to have a longer career beyond a year to year MLE level contract.

Well, we don't know that they won't be able to retain him. We don't even know that the Wizards wouldn't match what he's offered in Europe.
In any case, this team isn't going to do anything much next year. Veteran bandaids are no help going forward. We'd be much better off taking a long look at someone younger. Hell, I'd rather give Cassius Winston a run!
edit: Delon Wright isn't going to be in our budget.

Wright won’t get more than the MLE!

Congrats Sato. smart move to end his career - however long it will be - where he's popular. Future coach. Really doesn't serve any function to the Wiz now,but did a great job when he was here. hopefully,we will trade kuzma for a pg - I don't know who - but someone will become available.

Re: Satoransky returning to Europe? Sato in talks with Barcelona
B/c we were discussing an alternative to Sato, I had in mind the idea of a backup PG. That's why I said Wright wouldn't be in our budget.
A good player for sure. He made $8.5m this year. But Wright is Wrong. The wrong age to acquire for a key spot. He's 30.
We are not a good team. We are a bad team. We will be a bad team again next year -- bad not good.
Any key player we add must be added with an eye to the future. Any older player we add must be added at low cost (preferably veteran minimum) & for 1 year plus a team option -- no more. If we do otherwise, we'll continue to hover around 35 wins a year for the indefinite future.
Could I be wrong? Of course I could! & here's hoping I am!
After all... Brad could do what few do in their 11th NBA season & come off a down year to become better than he ever was. Kristaps Porzingis could do what he's never done & play at a high level for a whole season. Kuzma could suddenly accelerate in his 6th year to become something far better than he's been. KCP might rebound from an off year to return to his prime of 2-3 years ago. Rui might defy odds & use his 4th year to take a really big jump. Deni & Corey might accelerate their development. Ditto Gafford. Todd might show that he's an NBA player. We might score an immediate stud in the draft. Vernon Carey might become the offensive force he was in college.
May it be so! Every bit of it! But... didn't we just go through this?

Good for him. Sato had a really good NBA career, was easy to root for. He’ll be happy and make good money playing for FCB.
We are better off giving Winston/Ayayi/a rookie that playing time.

I wish Sato the best, and on the plus side: this increases the pressure on Shepp to make a big move to acquire more backcourt depth, which means makes a Beal trade that much more likely.

Let’s hope there is a chance he stays. He would be a great vet guard off the bench for us.

Just think, if all goes right, we can upgrade our backcourt big time from what it looked like last February. After the All-Star break, our backcourt was Neto, Ish and KCP.
At the start of the season, it could be Daniels, Sato, Beal and KCP.
