Re: Official Will "The Thrill" Barton Thread
Been a fan of his since he came in the league. Mostly I just like watching him play. He's got that SWAG.
Also I was listening to the locked on wizards podcast and the host was talking about how Barton ranks in the top 10 defenders via some advanced defensive stats. Meanwhile I've been reading on here that hes an awful defender. Any stat nerds (nate) want to look at this?

Those numbers are probably cause of the 2x reigning NBA MVP
Nuggets fans were very frustrated with his defense last year

So I heard. This could just be the faulty eye test though. I heard he ranks as one of the top players at chasing off ball shooters.

Loved his comments about his mentorship of kids. Seems like a good dude.

Individual wing defense is really hard to measure with statistics, so I take everything with a grain of salt. But it's notable that dRPM absolutely LOVES Barton's defense, ranking him 2nd overall behind only Tatum. And other highly ranked guys on the list (Bridges, Barnes, Wiggins, Herbert Jones, Anunoby, Okoru) pass the smell test.
On the other hand RAPTOR doesn't care much for his defense, ranking him 77th among SF's.
I'd say that most of these summary stats that rely on on/off data are going to have a difficult time getting an accurate read on Barton because Denver's on/off situation is so dominated by Jokic.

So you can probably take it somewhere in the middle and say he's a solid defender.nate33 wrote:AFM wrote:Been a fan of his since he came in the league. Mostly I just like watching him play. He's got that SWAG.

Pinched from the Nuggs board, any stat geek know if this is accurate?

The issue is that Barton was bad last year, according to advanced stats he was one of the worst starters in the league and a borderline rotation player. His value was an expiring contract, but did anybody really believe that Kroenke would agree to take back a longer deal for an overpaid player?

Re: Official Will "The Thrill" Barton Thread
Barton is a player gifted with all of the talent in the world except for basic decision making. So his defense *can* be great, but he can also inexplicably elect to forsake the defensive scheme.
Think of him as being in the Nick Young mold. Nick could play good man defense and keep up with people on screens, but if he had to rotate multiple times in one possession...

Nate already dealt with this. Look back a couple of posts.

The issue with Barton is two fold, his decision making has always been bad, and now the injuries seem to have caught up with him. Long term stats will show that Barton used to be a good defender, especially at SF, but he does not have the speed or quickness to catch up to guys when he makes mistakes nor can he get around screens. He also struggles to keep up with quick guards.
The good is that Barton can get hot and take over games on both ends for a few minutes, the bad is he thinks he can always do it and it only works about 1 in 5 tries. He is at least still good enough to draw defenders attention though, which with Morris's shooting should open more room for Beal.
