Training Camp Battle for 14th and 15th spots on the roster starts next week!

Post#1 » by bstein14 » Mon Sep 19, 2022 6:53 pm

Training camp starts next week. One of the interesting things will be to see who makes our cut to final 15 players. We're currently running with 17 but need to be down to 15 by the end of the Preseason.

Obviously on the roster.
1. Cade
2. Bey
3. Stewart
4. Ivey
5. Duren
6. Bagley
7. Diallo
8. Livers
9. Burks
10. Olynyk
----
Most likely safe
11. Hayes
12. CoJo
13. Noel
Days might be numbered
14. McGruder - Just signed a contract, but could be Weaver doing him a solid getting him paid this season.
15. Kevin Knox - Was signed to a deal, but could see him not making the cut if he doesn't perform well & mesh with team.
16. Saben Lee - 3rd year 2nd rounder that likely needs to show something beyond being a G League star.
17. Kemba Walker - Was a rumored buyout candidate but wasn't able to secure a guaranteed deal elsewhere.

I think most people here are assuming tht it will be Lee and Kemba gone, but I wouldn't be surprised to see one (or possibly both) of those guys do really well this pre-season with their backs against the wall and potentially future NBA career in the balance.

I think McGruder is a lock.

Can't see a way Saben makes it, just too many guards in front of him.
I think Knox sucks and I have no idea why we signed him, but I can't see us just eating his contract.
I assume Kemba just gets cut. That was the plan all along. It's just a matter of getting the best deal for both sides in that transaction.

It’s gotta be Lee and Walker that are gone. Nothing else would make sense barring a bad injury.

Lee and Kemba. If Kemba plays any pre-season it will be to prove he's healthy enough to get a vet minimum from a contender to then accept a buy out.

I could see Diallo traded for SRP and cap space to open up an extra roster spot though as well. Hami ain't gonna be happy with sparse minutes this season in a contract year for him.

Could see CoJo dealt to PHX if Burks is the new veteran guard and team still wants PT for Hayes.

With all due respect, that's a pretty broad definition of "interesting." :)

In all seriousness I'd agree with the Lee and Walker assessments. I don't think the plan was ever to have Kemba Walker play here, from either the Pistons' side or his. And my guess is Lee's time is just about done.

And when those guys become interesting to me it's time to find a new hobby.

The only reason Kemba is still here is because he can’t find a second team to sign him to a minimum deal to recoup the money he’d lose in a buyout.

No way he plays for us. I think Saben is the odd man out.

Lee and Walker for me too. I'm fine playing them both some minutes in preseason to see if either can change minds though. I'll also agree that trading Diallo for a 2nd to open up a spot might be an option IF he hasn't developed his jumper at all over the summer.

I am somewhat excited the Pistons begin training camp. We'll have at least some fresh articles to read about this person's game developing or this person's improved muscle mass.

Who is actually sitting at the end on the bench doesn't matter much to me, and if we have to watch them play more than a token few games, that will be the problem.

I would agree that its not really interesting, unless Saben Lee or Kemba Walker end up playing themselves into one of our 15 spots and then it would get interesting to see who we'd cut, or if we'd try to find a trade to open up a spot. If Saben Lee and Kemba just kind of come in and go through the motions and don't show us anything in the Preseason, then its certainly not interesting.

I remember a few years back when everyone essentially thought Wood would be cut and we'd be going with old man Joe Johnson for the 15th spot because he was a former client of Arn Tellum, and then Wood ended up going out there and earning that spot and Joe got cut even though he likely signed with us on that camp deal because he thought that 15th spot would be pretty open on our sub par team.

Lee is trash. You could make reasonable arguments for those other guys, but I'd guess Kemba. Agree with Billl that McGruder is a lock. Good lockeroom guy. Knows his role is limited but can knock down a shot when called upon.

I'd still really like to see us move Diallo to another team. Give him a better opportunity to earn minutes. He belongs in this league, I just don't know how he'd get minutes on this particular team. At least when paired with a Jackson/CoJo type there would still be some shooting on the floor. You can't run him & Hayes out there together. And especially not with Duren on that same 2nd unit. Egad!

Still lots of time but a 2 for 1 deal and then waiving Lee could clean it up nicely.

I agree w most others that Lee and Walker are gone. But also thinking along the lines of what Cowology just hinted at - we can still make a move. Utah is still dumping the rest of their vets, and other teams still have some roster cleanup as well. We could certainly get involved as a facilitator.

That Kemba will never play a game here is a foregone conclusion. There is no Edwards Walker jersey for sale.

You don't think Kemba will play at all in the preseason for us?

Yup! Thought the same thing when I saw it... Would be like wearing a TMac Pistons jersey or a Sheed Hawks jersey.

Now it essentially looks like its just Kemba likely to be waived unless he comes in and gets the job done in training camp and the Preseason.

Diallo is even more blocked after the trade as Bogi plays the 3-4, vs KO was a 4-5. Burks probably gets all his minutes at the back-up 2. Meaning CoJo and Hayes are back-up PG's. Bey, Bogi, Livers at the three, Bagley, Bogi, Stewart at the four. Stew, Noel and Duren at the five. Diallo is 4th on any positional depth chart - he's not going to be happy with that.

I keep Kemba out of spite if he's playing hardball on a buyout.
