Cade #35 in ESPN 2022-23 Rankings

Post#1 » by Laimbeer » Wed Sep 21, 2022 8:35 pm

No. 35: Cade Cunningham

Detroit Pistons | PG

2021 NBArank: 76

Swing skill: Cunningham is a Swiss Army knife, capable of sliding between any of the backcourt positions at 6-foot-6, 220 pounds with a 7-foot wingspan. He's highly switchable and versatile defensively and able to play on or off the ball with his ability to handle, pass and shoot. The soon-to-be 21-year-old should make a jump in his sophomore season, especially from beyond the arc after shooting 31.4% as a rookie.

Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

Noteworthy that he’s ahead of Barnes and Mobley, both of whom finished ahead of him in the ROY picture.

Having only 1 top 100 player is rough. Are we the only team
in that situation?

The no others thing is harsh, but let's be honest, this is VERY generous for Cade from what we've seen so far. I think he'll justify it, no doubt, but it's pretty damn high for now.

I believe he's too low just based on what we all watched at the end of the season.

Doesn't matter though, because at the mid-point of this season it will become readily apparent.

I'm actually surprised, that for this season, he's ranked above guys like LaMelo Ball and DeJounte Murray who have been young all-stars in this league already. I think Cade's clearly going to be the best player of those 3 soon, but surprised that ESPN is already putting him above them..... also putting Cade about SGA who averaged an efficient 30 a night down the stretch last season, and 11 spots ahead of another young all-star in Darius Garland.

I'm a big fan of Cade's potential and think he could be a borderline all-star for us next year, but just surprising to see Cade above some of these guys.

There's also some strange players above Cade, like Marcus Smart who is coming off the DPOY award but I don't think is a player the caliber of Cade and even he would admit that.

The list is terrible for a lot of reasons but it does what it set out to do:

Generate clicks and conversation.

There's no realistic way Cade should be ranked that high but he's not the only one

In hindsight, was ESPN's ranking of Cade at 76 last year justified and accurate? He started out quite poorly, after all.

There’s a little projection in the list:

We asked, "Which player will be better in 2022-23?" Voters had to predict what they expected from each player during the season.

Not sure if there are others (OKC has SGA and giddey) but Orlando only has banchero and Houston only has jalen green.

edit: spurs don’t have a single player in the top 100 but I’m surprised keldon Johnson didn’t make it.

I'm pretty sure it's a projection, they have rookies who never played an NBA game in the top 100.
I don't think I'm biased in saying that Cade was the most impactful rookie in the second half of the season, the guy was playing at a legit All Star level at times so I could easily see him being a top 40 player next season.

I'm a little surprised that Bey didn't make the top 100. He seems to get a lot more respect nationally than he gets from the Pistons fanbase but not in this case.

It's a projection, not solely based on what players have accomplished in the past. You don't think Cade has the potential to be a top 40 player next season based on skillset and how he closed last season?

Pretty much. Its value in the grand scheme is absolutely zero.
