Charlotte Hornets next franchise up for sale?

Post#1 » by amcoolio » Sat Sep 24, 2022 3:44 am

I dont know if Bill Simmons misspoke, but he’s usually connected with stuff like this… he called the Seattle and Vegas expansion before the news stories among other things… but on his podcast, while discussing the Suns sale, he said “you’ve got Seattle and Vegas money coming in, Charlotte is going to become available, and you would have tied them to the Minnesota price but now who knows..”

He thinks the Suns will be evaluated at 4.7 billion and when that happens other owners will look to sell as well to cash in

since we know jordan will never do what it takes to allow this team to be successful, then i'm all for it, provided 3 things are true
1. the new owner doesnt move he team (lease w/ arena is until 2050)
2. its not dave tepper
3. its not a scumbag like sarver

jordan doesn't use his best asset (his image, clout) to help the team, so what does it matter he is our owner? maybe gets 2 more mid 1st rounders to work out because they think they might meet him?

all that being said, why would simmons know anything more on this than anyone else? what motivation does jordan have to sell? he's not hurting for money? its not like this keeps him from his hobbies. his entire family and all his friends works for us. he really gonna kill their jobs? he's not too old that time is running out.

unless he's just embarrassed that he hasnt been able to have a sustained winning team in 15 years
throwing in the towel
knows our future is more bleak than ever

Jordan's ego wouldn't allow him to let go of the team just yet.

I’d sure hope not, but doesn’t Simmons spend most of his podcasts speculating?

I just listened to it. He was saying Cuban would want to sell the Mavericks if he got the right offer, and then tied in Charlotte to the thinking that if prices were high, they’d be the next one up for sale. Wasn’t implying Jordan wants to sell but he was predicting that if a bunch of selling dominoes fell, they’d become available.

That was in a different part of the podcast....the "Charlotte is becoming available" was out of the blue and we were the only team mentioned. I thought he meant the Pelicans or something, because we haven't heard any speculation at all on the Hornets listening to offers

I'll try to clip the part today when I'm off work

I've stated my belief that the Hornets will never be successful with Jordan at the helm. I still feel that way, especially with how this entire off-season has been handled (bungled).

Whether or not Jordan is actually looking to sell is another story. He's way into the positive on his investment and has enough income streams from other things that this can be a family held revenue stream for him as he gets older.

I can also see the other side of him wanting to sell because it's been nothing but bad optics for him from the start. Some of which he earned and some of which was just lazy big-name targeting by the media. I could see a guy with his personality traits wanting to cut bait.

What's crazy is if he does sell, it would likely be derivative of the Miles situation imploding the franchise. The long term butterfly effect of him being a **** is going to be incredible.

Not that it’s stopped Jordan before, but selling within the next decade would be stupid as hell, with franchise and league values soaring.

I get that we’ve had an awful offseason but why do we need to act like losing Miles Bridges (potentially) is like losing an All NBA player? He was really good and our second best player, but certainly not irreplaceable. We have a 21 year old STUD at PG who hasn’t even peaked yet plus a slew of young players that could all develop further. We are obviously not a contending team right now, but the recent treadmill team stuck with Batum/MKG led by Kemba was a much, much more bleak situation that we all thought would take a decade to climb out of. There’s a lot of work to do, but I’d rather have our roster than half of the others out there plus we have assets to maneuver with. Let’s just chill and see what happens.

On one hand, I'd be very happy if MJ sells the team. We will never be a serious franchise with him as owner.

On the other, I'd be very nervous about being relocated if MJ sells the team.

I believe the signed lease with the city through 2045 is in place regardless of owner.

While a huge expense, I would venture the lease could be bought out as part of the terms of sale IF someone was determined to relocate to another city. So many complications with that however…which would increase the difficulty of reaching an agreement. Economic challenges likely over the next couple of years also would make a sale more troublesome right now.

But…if you’re rich enough, like filthy rich, and want a new toy…
I continue to wait...and hope...for the return to Hornet's glory.

Speculating on such a scant line from an **** like Bill Simmons just doesn’t really feel like a worthy pursuit. Maybe he knows something, maybe he doesn’t but he offered so little information, I think he misspoke and it wouldnt be the first time he didn’t know **** about a team outside of Boston.

Simmons has a history of **** on Charlotte/MJ so yeah, let's not pay any more attention to this.

Sarver as owner, Udoka to coach and Bridges back as captain.

I don't think its likely, but I'm glad people are talking about it because I hope MJ hears that people are clowning on him.

If a smart, forward thinking person with ties to NC is interested in buying the Hornets I hope it happens. The owner of Epic Games, Tim Sweeney, has the money and the NC ties.

I thin Tepper is the most likely buyer. He already owns the Panthers and Charlotte FC.
